The beaches are wide and uncrowded (even in the summer!), great biking, birdwatching and many family-oriented activities. Golf and tennis. The villas are well-appointed and great for families. We really like Turtle Point.

If you like golf and nature a great place to visit. A little too quiet in April for us, but would love to return I. The height of the summer.

While visiting in nearby Charleston on a cold and windy day, we decided to drive south to visit Kiawah Island, having heard nice things about it and seeing it in South Carolina tourism ads. Upon arriving at the main entrance to the island, we stopped at the gate house where we were asked about our intentions while visiting their sacred ground. We explained that we just wanted to see the sights and have lunch. The very unpleasant gate attendant told us, no, we did not have permission to enter this privileged area. Mind you, we are presentable, mannerly seniors, driving a decent car. The gate attendant told us we needed to go to "the real estate office" where we would obtain a pass to gain entry. This we did, only to be told for the second time in five minutes, basically, we don't want you here. Go away. (Paraphrasing). So much for southern hospitality. The good people of South Carolina will never again be troubled by our desire to spend money in their state. My message is: stay away. They don't want you there.

We absolutely love our time spent in Kiawah. It is a quiet island with abundant natural beauty and wildlife. In spite of its very peaceful, quiet atmosphere there is much to do including world class golf and tennis. There are miles of bike paths throughout the island, along with pools and parks. If you wish to go into downtown Charleston, it is only about 30 minutes away. We find that once on the island we rarely want to leave. There is a security gate on the island which helps keep traffic and congestion to a minimum......drive through and feel your stress disappear as you switch over to "island time".
