Admittedly this is only our second visit to the Boathouse; we are frequent visitors to the area and last year was the first time we went with friends who consider this restaurant is one of their favorites. We had an unique experience as my previous review indicates.
My DH and I had dinner a few nights ago - a week night - and, unlike our first visit, we were disappointed. We ordered drinks...no problem; we were asked for our order - my husband had a few questions about several options and we ordered (no appetizer or salad). Our order came quickly; I ordered grilled flounder with grits; he ordered one of the scallop entrees with mashed potatoes; both were warm - not as hot as we would have liked (we did not have the oppounity to comment on this); my husband's order wasn't quite what was described - the type and number of scallops - but what he had was OK - but he was disappointed that it wasn't what he was told.
Overall the whole meal "OK"....nothing great...nothing "WOW".
But the worst part was that once we were served our meal, we never saw our server again until we were finished (we would have ordered another round of drinks and never had that opportunity).
While we waited for our check, we "evaluated" the experience; we both felt that for what we got, compared to other similar restaurants, that the prices were high. So the "teacher" in me said B-/C+; my husband said 5/6 out of 10....and we both talked about the area where we were seated - water view (but no view with cool weather, dirty shades - understandable)..., but, the area - floor was dirty, the tables were wiped but not really clean.
So....bottom line. Would we return; probably not. And we were really looking for a stellar experience.

“Fantastic View, Food, and Service”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

While visiting Charleston and surrounding areas, this restaurant is a must! While enjoying a drink at the top outside bar, you can overlook Breach Inlet, the Intra-coastl waterways and the dolphins at play. The food and services are outstanding. It is wise to call for reservations because it's such a popular restaurant even for the "Locals like Me".

“Tremendous seafood!”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

Awesome seafood dishes, liked the ambiance here as well. I had crab cakes and my husband had a platter of scallops, oysters. We both enjoyed the dishes tremendously. This is so far and above a Red Lobster, as the other reviewer stated. Very unique, tasty meals, comfortable, friendly atmosphere. What more can you ask for a restaurant?

“Beautiful sunsets, great seafood.”
Reviewed March 8, 2013

A group of friends and I dined at the Boat House recently. We were impressed with the food. It was simple, great tasting low country seafood. Nothing too fancy, just good food. The prices were fair. The drinks were good. Service was excellent.

Not much to say on this property other than its a fine choice for dinner and a sunset while on Isle of Palms.

“Food: very good; otherwise, not a great experience.”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

The Boathouse is, essentially, a Red Lobster. Should the owners ever decide to sell to Red Lobster, other than the Marque, little would have to be changed....they’d also have to get rid of the mandatory Valet Parking. The restaurant has a parking lot on premises, but you have to use the Valet to park your car there……..the Valet is often overwhelmed with cars. (See Picture) Across the street is a small dead end street where you can park for free, but necessitates dodging standing water en-route to braving traffic as you cross the street to get to and from the restaurant.

I had: Soup du jour, which was a gumbo with some vegetables, a delicious base and seafood. It was very good. I then had their house salad and dressing (Balsamic Vinaigrette), also very good. My entrée was Red Snapper. Living the last 38 years within hours of the Gulf of Mexico where Red Snapper abounds, I have come to appreciate an excellent cut of Red Snapper filet perfectly grilled. This was it!!!! Great fish, grilled to perfection!!

The Not So Good:

The restaurant is over crowded with tables so closely arranged they are barely one skinny person apart…couple that to an over utilized table waiting staff, the occasional quest who braves going to the rest room, and you have the ingredients for many traffic jams. The over utilized waiting staff results in rare returns to your table for drink refills and near needing aircraft carrier arresting gear to stop them with a request which is often followed by an expression of: ‘Are you serious’!!!! Part of the strategy stopping you from interrupting the waiting staff’s high speed navigation around the overly high density dining table placements, is to charge for a second basket of bread, $1.95 (This hardly goes with Valet parking)

Should Red Lobster ever buy the Boathouse, several things would have to change: Space the tables a little further apart; reduce the number of tables the staff has to wait on; get rid of the Valet; don’t charge for a second basket of rolls; replace the second rate rolls with the massively better rolls indigenous to Red Lobster and last but not least; require the staff to be far more accommodating and friendly and less like they are irritated that you have invaded their space.

Although the food was really good, I won’t go back. There are too many really good choices in this very restaurant rich area of our great country. If having a Valet is supposed to present this restaurant as a ‘better dining experience’, other than the food, the concept has miserably failed. It’s not that I dislike Valet parking, but it is symbolic of the Boathouse owners apparent belief good food will bate you into coming here and then from Valet tipping to charging for an extra small basket of average bread, yet poor service with an attitude, the owners can squeeze every possible dime out of you for an overall mediocre dining experience.
