“Outstanding Family Vacation Location”
Reviewed July 6, 2014

We had a spectacular time at the Wild Dunes resort. The entire hotel staff from top to bottom was absolutely outstanding. All were friendly, courteous and constantly trying to find ways to make our stay even more enjoyable. There are numerous activities for families and children of all ages. We were in one of the penthouses and had 10 people. Rooms were large and well appointed. There was wifi and cable TV. There was plenty of room with a well stocked kitchen and we ate a significant number of meals in. We found pricing comparable to renting a house on the beach but thought this a much better option with the significant amount of amenities. The five pools all cater to different groups from adult to toddler. The beach is a short walk and umbrella's and beach chairs are available for rent. The kids also rented paddle boards. There are parachute rides and jet ski's available near the resort at the marina for rent as well.
The golf courses are excellent. The bay course has significant water and is really for the more advanced player. The dunes course is equally as beautiful, a little more forgiving and has ocean view holes for the finish. We enjoyed both biking and walking the trails along the main road...even saw some of the local alligators in the lagoon next door. Highly recommend it for families and for a relaxing vacation for adults as well.

Room Tip: Even the marsh side views are nice. The road in front of the hotel can be fairly busy so higher up i...

Having once owned a home on The Isle of Palms, we are very familiar with Wild Dunes.
We decided to rent a three bedroom condo in the Village area, These units are close to the beach and also adjacent to a nice quiet pool area. The food at the pool is quite good and it is a relaxing place to hang out.
The Pavilion Pool along the Ocean is more crowded and if that is your thing then head there.
There is an Adult only pool behind the Boardwalk Inn which is where I would suggest if you want peace and quiet.

Our condo was a three bedroom, decorated nicely and very well furnished. The unit had two balconies, one off the master and one off the den. The parking was right under the building and very close. Cleaning staff was very good as well.

The walk to the beach was 5 minutes. We would recommend Wild Dunes to anyone wanting a nice relaxing vacation.

Believe it or not, we are a family of four that has traveled from Northern California to Isle of Palms for summer vacations four times over the past eight years. Whenever we tell friends about going to SC, they always say "Oh, do you have family there?" Nope, we just love Wild Dunes! Wild Dunes is a magical & relaxing place that all of us (me, husband, two daughters 14 & 10) enjoy. Our most recent stay was June 21 - July 1.

We stayed in a two bedroom condo in the Village. The condos are spacious, well-equipped, comfortable and beautifully decorated. They have full kitchens so you have the option of eating some meals in which helps a bit with the overall cost of the trip. There is a Harris-Teeter on the island which offers a full array of groceries. A little farther away (off island) are other grocery options including Target, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.

From the Village condos it is just a short walk to the boardwalk and beach. The beach is gorgeous and has a very gradual slope so you can walk out quite a ways and the water is still fairly shallow. It's great for wading, swimming, boogie-boarding and I even saw a few kids on surfboards later in the day when wind and waves came up a bit. The resort has a very long stretch of beach, perfect for taking long walks. The sand is soft & fine, it is very clean and the water is so warm! (In our area, you need a wet suit to go in the ocean.)

Aside from the beach, there are many, many activities to choose from at the resort. We've biked, golfed, played tennis, swam in the pools (including lap swimming at the swim center), worked out in the fitness center (adults), taken a yoga class, played bingo, competed in the family trivia games, watched outdoor movies, made s'mores at the fire pit, visited the on-site spa....the list goes on and on. My younger daughter especially enjoys the kids crafts and activities. There are different activities offered each week day such as painting a bird house, tie-dying a shirt, an archery set up, making "sand candy" sticks and making sugar bath scrub. You can pay to participate in a kids activity as a drop-in participant or this year they also offer a pass which enables your kiddo to go to as many of the activities as they wish for one price.

When you're ready to explore the surrounding area, the staff can set you up with a variety of activities to choose from. This year we took the pontoon boat to Caper's Island and its beautiful Boneyard Beach. That was a highlight of this trip! We loved exploring the tide pools and found lots of pretty shells. On our previous trip we tried a kayaking tour which was great also. For those unfamiliar with this area, the Low Country is an amazing and interesting ecosystem. I'd highly recommend doing at least one activity where you can learn about life in the salt marshes.

In addition to all this, you are very close to Charleston with its plethora of dining, shopping and entertainment options.

Clearly this is not a budget vacation, but you will get what you pay for here. Wild Dunes is a lovely resort is a beautiful place that provides lots of opportunities for making fun family memories. If it's an option for you, I highly recommend!

We were excited to visit Wild Dunes - Boardwalk Inn for the first time. What a disappointment. I booked online, confirmed an upgrade with the pre-check in concierge and then spent 45 minutes waiting upon arrival trying to get it straightened out. I booked a room inside the Inn and was told I would receive a $50 dining credit. Upon arrival was told I was in the Village. Since we were only staying one night, I declined and said I preferred the hotel. Found me a room and then took back the dining credit! Unbelieveable. When we finally were showed our room 2 hours later, entered and could not get into the bathroom... the door was locked! had to call a bellman to let us in to our own bathroom. The toilet was not cleaned. The air conditioner sounded like a freight train all night long.
We had a lunch at the snack bar area at the ocean side which was terrible. $9 for a dried out fish sandwich and stale bun. Overpriced drinks.
The beach and boardwalk area were very overcrowded and the trash cans were overflowing late evening. Went back out early this morning for a walk, and they had not yet been emptied.
I get that this is 4th of July week and they are busy but I sure did not expect this.
I cannot recommend and I will never be going back.

What a wonderful place! My husband and I spent our 21st anniversary there which I planned as a surprise for him. The staff and customer service were so helpful! They even pointed me to a photographer/pastor team who helped us renew our vows right there on the beach. My husband thanked me over and over for planning such a wonderful trip. We played golf, rode bikes, visited the beach and the Boardwalk pool. The restaurants there offer much variety and everything is so convenient. Our only regret was that we had to leave when we really wanted to stay. We will be back!

We just fell in love with this place. We stayed in a 1 bedroom village condo and it was perfect. The staff was super nice and so were the accommodations. The beach wasn't too crowded and that was nice, the pools were clean and fun. We also enjoyed the free outdoor movies they did at night. Can't wait to go back someday

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Boardwalk Inn for one night unexpectedly after a wedding. We experienced horrible customer service when we checked in around 2am. We asked for a 10:30 am wake up call that never got done. We were woken up by the housekeepers chatting loudly in the hallway early in the morning. The price of the room was not worth the stay, not to mention the front desk staff over night was incompetent at checking us into our room in a timely manner. I would not recommend staying here. We also had to call about a $30 charge that was not on our bill summary, but made it's way onto our credit card. If you're looking for an excellent and welcoming place to stay on an island outside of Charleston, SC I would highly recommend The Sanctuary on Kiawah Island.
