After a recent review on Trip Advisor of the top restaurants in Hilton Head, we noted that Michael Anthony's Restaurant was right up there. Why we never heard of this or visited it in the past 25 years we have been coming to the island, I don't know. But now that we have visited, we will be back!
We tried to get into the restaurant with a last minute call on Friday night but no tables were available until late, so we made a 6:15 PM reservation for Saturday evening instead. We arrived Saturday, but it was dark already and very difficult to locate the restaurant as it is in a strip office complex and we did not see the sign of the address. We drive around the small parking lot and had difficulty locating a space as it was very crowded already due to other restaurants in that area too. We found it finally, parked and went in. They asked if we had ever been there before and we indicated "no". They inquired how we heard of the restaurant and we indicated "Trip Advisor!"
The restaurant was not that busy at this hour, they led us to a smaller room called the "Market" which has store like shelves on it and various offerings that you can purchase like Italian tomatoes, specialty things for a salad, etc. There were only 4 tables in this smaller room, but there was one waiter that served that room and he was very attentive. This room also has many wine bottles of the offerings they have on display. There is a larger room with many other tables and also a bar area that you can also eat at.
We chose something different for a change in the wine offerings. My wife is choosy about what types of wines she will drink and they offer different "Flights" that include 3 different 2 ounce samples of wines - either red or white. We found this nice because it allowed us to sample the 3 different types. In the wine we chose the white offering which was flight #6 and it came with a pinot grigio, a sauvignon blanc and a chardonnay. We both loved the Rombauer Chardonnay, 2011, a Carneros offering. It was very rich, buttery, and slightly oaky but not a heavy after taste. They also provide a card that describes the wines to you so you can read and experience them by reading what others have to say too. We really enjoyed this.
For dinner, this was the first night of "Restaurant Week" offering and they had a price fix $29.00 three course offering. The portions were slightly smaller in our opinion; but still prepared with perfect attention to detail. We enjoyed all 3 courses, prepared exquisitely and top notch. The "cauliflower" on my salmon plate was cold and is prepared pureed; not to my liking. My wife had the gnocchi; very heavy and filling since it is a potato starch pasta but the sauce was to die for. The desserts too were smaller offerings, but quite perfect.
During dessert, we again tried Flight #8 of the wine offerings; 3 different dessert wine offerings. This was quite different, an ice wine, and 2 different Moscatos. We really loved the Adelsheim Deglace Williamette Valley Pinot Noir, 2008, from Oregon. Fantastic!
The total bill came to $100 for the 2 of us plus the tip. Nice in that we tried different wines, sampled some perfectly prepared foods and thoroughly enjoyed or evening here. We encourage you too to try Michael Anthony’s; we bet you will enjoy it too. Service, food, atmosphere, value - all top notch.
