Marriott's SurfWatch
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 30, 2012

There are many Marriott properties on Hilton Head Island, most of which are vacation clubs (i.e. timeshares). While I can't compare to the other Hilton Head Marriott's, we were pleased with our choice of the Surf Watch. My family and I have stayed at a number of Marriott timeshare properties across the U.S. and Caribbean, booking them as one would a regular hotel room on the Marriott web page. Our experience has been very similar with all of them. The rooms are spacious and well maintained, wi-fi and parking are free, though restaurant choices are a bit limited.

The Surf Watch is on a wide stretch of beach--very picturesque, though jellyfish and wood-like seaweed diminshed the beach experience a bit. There is an outdoor restaurant (really a food counter) with a fairly limited but acceptable number of food choices. They also have on-site bike rentals, which are a lot of fun and simple to ride throughout the area. (Flat terrain makes the peddling fairly easy and bike paths are plentiful).

If you play golf, hold off on booking until you check into the Marriott, as they provide deep discounts on a number of courses. We played the Old South course (about 15 minutes away) and enjoyed it very much.

One of my family members has multiple weeks at this location... and we never trade them. This location has everything - great staff, great activities for the kids, great rooms, and above all else, a pristine location. If you are traveling without a family, this particular spot may not be right for you during the summer... otherwise, it's right for everyone. Hilton Head Island a great place in general, and this place makes our yearly stays awesome every time. You can't go wrong here at all.

See all other reviews. I would only add that they continue to add and update each year. New putting circle, room furniture and cinema.

My family has been coming to Hilton head for more than 10 years. We have stayed at Marriotts all over the island and Surf Watch is one of our favorites. The rooms are very spacious and fit our family of 6. The master shower is like a water park. The kids love playing in it.
I have been reading others reviews on this place and wonder why people complain about the little things. Yes, you have to walk to the beach and pools, but they have a golf cart service if you don't want to walk. Yes, there is no major restaurant at the resort, but they have food at the one pool bar and your room has a full kitchen. Yes, the pools are crowded at times, but you have an ocean and beach within walking distance. This is vacation. Enjoy yourself and take in the beauty of this place.
Best things to do at Surf Watch:
Take a walk or bike ride on the beach. Use the outdoor grills to cook a meal. Sign up for one of the family activities during the week. Play shuffleboard. Cool off in the indoor pool. Enjoy a drink at the outdoor pool bar. Watch the wildlife from the boardwalk. Take family photos on the beach.
This is a great place for a family to share a vaction. We love coming here year after year.

We bought a 3-bedroom villa at Surf Watch when it was being built, but, living in California, this is the first time we have stayed there. We brought friends with us. It was terrific. We rented a cabana on Tuesday and Saturday which is very relaxing. Rita Etheridge from the Coastal Discovery Museum gave a very interesting talk on shells and sealife on Tuesday morning. We also visited the Pinckney Refuge on Wednesday morning from 7:30-9:30 with an outstanding tour by Carlos Chacon, Natural History Manager of the Coastal Discovery Museum. Then we drove on to Beaufort, a charming antebellum experience. We spent one day in Savannah, taking the trolley tour. We recommended the Gullah Tour to our friends which they thoroughly enjoyed. We had taken it six years ago, so we took the Historical walking tour of the Honey Horn Plantation, very well done. We bought fresh fish most every evening at nearby Barnacle Bill's. Surf Watch is first class; the staff is outstanding, the grounds are beautiful and well-maintained; the beach is great for walking. We loved our unit. It was an excellent week. We only wish we lived closer!

This resort is extremely family friendly. 3 pools. One is oceanside, with a quality bar/grille next to it. I enjoyed the fitness center, too.

We stayed in a 2 BR/2 BA oceanside villa from 6/7/2012 - 6/10/2012. Our villa was beautiful with the balcony overlooking the family pool/wetlands and ocean. It was impeccably clean with all the comforts of home. The staff could not be more accommodating. The beds and pillows were more comfortable than my own. The beach was a 2 minute walk down a boardwalk over the marsh where you can see herons and crabs. Or you can take a golf cart shuttle anywhere. They run constantly throughout the day. Great for families with kids. The Sea Salt Restaurant serves good luncheon type food. There are no oceanfront rooms as non of the buildings are directly on the beach. If you are not in building 55 or higher you will not have an ocean view. If you are not on the 3rd floor or higher you will not see the ocean either. If you want a relaxing family stay, then you can't go wrong. If you are looking for a lot of action and nightly entertainment, then this is not the place for you.

Room Tip: If you are not in building 55 or higher you will not have an ocean view. If you are not on the 3rd...
