Description: Signe's Heaven Bound Bakery & Café has been a Hilton Head Island tradition since 1972. Signe Gardo still coordinates the operation, which has been featured in numerous national publications as well as the Food Network for its eclectic breakfast and luncheon menu. All-day breakfast includes a remarkably delicious baked French Toast (blueberry, blackberry and old fashioned) as well as fluffy frittatas, hearty shrimp & grits and an assortment of fresh pastries. An array of Signe's specialty salads appeal to local vegetarians as well as her quiches and tarts. Sandwiches run the gamut from turkey & cranberry to Hot Reubens. Then, of course, there are desserts - lots of them, including our renowned double-chocolate "Mud-dauber" cupcake to sweet-potato/pecan pies, fresh key lime pie and a choice of cakes by the slice, made daily.

Walk in the door, smell the freshly baked bread, order up breakfast and choose ito sit inside or out. With 300 days of sunshine at sunrise this Hilton Head Island restaurant is a gem. Inside you will see folk art and lots of local artist "gullah" paintings. Servers are terrific, music is appropriately set to inspirational styles, and best of all the quiche and sunrise breakfasts are delightful. The Rachel Ray designed special of blueberry, raspberry and strawberry filled French toast is heavenly...oh yes, that's what the menu says on the front cover "Signes...heaven bound".

We went for lunch on Saturday and they close at 2pm. We were there at 12:45 and the staff seemed to be overworked and ready to go. There was no space on the outdoor deck and although the indoor area was almost empty, the bustle of the staff getting food outside left us feeling forgotten. I had the reuben and she had the chicken salad sandwich. Sandwiches came with small bag of chips. Bakery section was very busy with diners paying their bills and then adding bakery items to go.

We have visited Hilton Head yearly for more than 20 years, and have been Signe's customers from year one. Had been eager for the baked french toast since last year. It did not disappoint. I had the blackberry, companion the blueberry. Both were delicious. The sausage patties are a tad spicy, but yummy. The side of fruit was fresh and varied. We also carried out two pieces of pecan pie. Other stops have been for muffins and bars. Each has been satisfying. And be sure to try the Key Lime Poundcake; you'll find yourself ordering an entire cake to take home. Also, the Super Salad is a favorite. But, honestly, never have had a meal here that was not good.

Capppucino Pound Cake, Key Lime Pound Cake and many more. Excellent! We had lunch on the outside porch which is pet friendly. Signe is a sweetheart.
