We were looking for something different to do on Hilton Head, and after reading reviews, decided to check it out. It is very hard to find, and a lot of the locals don't even know about it. The first time we came was at high tide, and there was barely any beach to walk on. We came again at low tide a couple of days later, and after walking through tons of mud, succeeded it finding around 2 whelk/conch shells. Definitely a way to see the more nature part of Hilton Head. If you are planning on going to dinner afterward, I would recommend leaving time to go home and shower:)

Don't underestimate this slightly off-the-beaten path beach park. It is a great place to go for solitude and beach combing. You can walk for an hour and not encounter another person. Great way to get a taste of what the islands must have been like before the hotels and crowds.

We happened upon Mitchelville Freedom Park during a bike ride. It was low tide and the marine life was extraordinary. We saw crabs, shells, clams, miles of undisturbed beach...along with marshes and beautiful Cyprus trees. There were picnic tables with gazebos, just beautiful!

This is where we go to find the best seashells on the island. Today we found over 20 shark teeth and after a storm last week found two huge knobbed welks. Most times you will have the beach to yourself. Go at low tide to find hermit crabs roaming the mud flats. Great for walking your dog as well.

Hate to write this review as I love how quiet and serene this spot is and don't want it to change once everyone finds out about it. I have been visiting the Island for more than 10 years. Love the hustle and bustle of the beaches but sometimes you want a little peace and a more natural location. This isn't easy to find in Hilton Head. Years ago we found that natural beach location at Burkes Beach but when we went back this year Burkes Beach is becoming quite populated (in comparison to what it was like 6 years ago). This is my new peaceful spot. We were told during low tide you can see halfway to the horizon and this is true. The water is so far out I don't think you could actually get to the water's edge. But this is not your normal beach area. This one is comprised of flat lands, rocks and lots of birds, nature etc....I loved strolling around this area. If you are there during low tide make sure you go back at high tide. What a difference a few hours make. You will not see most of the grassy areas and rocks and the water will be very close to the beach path. The difference is unlike anything I have ever seen. Would not have imagined there was a spot on the island like this. There are restrooms and a place to wash off your feet but that's about it. Take a picnic and watch the tide roll in.
