“Beautiful area very informative”

We stopped by this attraction on a whim. It was great , the museum is free but offers guided walks and tours for a nominal fee. They also have special talks and programs throughout the week. Great activity for kids. A great overview of the low country and the history of the area.

“Lowcountry life introduction - So much to offer for families”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 11, 2014

This was our second visit and found it just as great as the first time. This is a great introduction to Lowcountry life from the plantation home, farm, plants and animals of the area.

We originally came on an open day and the kids got to dissect a squid and use the ink for writing with, tie dye a handkerchief with indigo, see basket weaving, pet the marsh tacky horses, and collect crabs from the traps and eat them after they were cooked.

This time there were no formal events on, but we enjoyed the education area with baby horseshoe crabs and other resources, as well as walking through the "Fibers, Glorious Fibers" exhibit(through 18 June). We enjoyed the butterfly area and the carnivorous plants too.

There is NO charge for the museum, but I strongly recommend donations to help keep this great place going for future visitors. I also highly recommend participating in one of their Tours, Walks, and Cruises, or special summer activities (low country critters, fishing camp for kids, captain William Hilton and the Adventure which are reasonably priced for their content.

Honestly, there's not a whole lot to see. We only saw about four butterflies in the butterfly encounter. The best part was seeing the different types of plants and the two horses. Children would probably enjoy this visit more than adults.

“Quick visit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2014

While visiting HIlton Head recently, we stopped at the Coastal Discovery Museum. We only stayed about an hour but you could stay longer if you wanted to. First of all, be sure to put the actual address into your GPS when looking for it. If you just put 'Coastal Discovery Museum' you'll be directed to a former location where there is now a restaurant located. The workers in the main house were very helpful, explained how there were 3 boardwalks on the property, a butterfly house, and a barn. The self-guided tour (which is free) had informational placards along all the paths. When we were there (May) we didn't see much wildlife.

“A great start to our vacation”

After arriving in Hilton Head Island, SC this is the first tourist attraction site that we visited in the island. It was a very relaxing stroll into their various exhibits. My kids thought that the Carnivorous Plants Bog Garden exhibit was very cool. We saw some Venus Fly Trap plants--some with insect still trapped inside--and pitcher plants. I think this museum offers a good introduction to the island for tourists like us.
