“An Original Marriott on the Beach”
Reviewed October 6, 2012

Pros:

1. The grounds are well kept with and the staff is helpful and friendly.
2. On the beach. The beach is hard packed and deep making for great walking, biking, and just relaxing a pleasure. Being off-season (early Oct.) the beach was not crowded.
3. Location: Monarch is conveniently located in the Sea Pines Plantation section of Hilton Head. Easy to find and close to several golf courses and marinas.

Cons:

1. The Monarch, like several other Marriott properties on the island is a timeshare. You will not find full hotel accommodations here.
2. This is one of the oldest properties in the Marriot portfolio (30 years old) and the suites, as noted in the information provided upon arrival, are about to undergo a face-lift later this year. The suites can accommodate four adults comfortably, but they are smaller than those found at Marriott’s newer locations and could be a bit tight for a large family
3. If you have not been to Hilton Head, be aware that the “plantations” are controlled by passes. When you first arrive at sea Pines Plantation, for example, you will pass through a guarded gate and will have to pay $5/vehicle for admittance. If staying at a hotel, they will provide a permit covering the remainder of your stay.

In sum, the Monarch is a good place to stay with the convenience of a wide beach, nice pool and easy access to many attractions on the island.

We stayed at the Monarch for a great week in September. Since this is the original Marriott Vacation Club property, many of the vacationers are owners of a specific week. However, the guests are very friendly as are the staff. The villas are well furnished and the property is immaculately maintained. The one draw back is that the guest bedroom has two twin beds - not great for vacationing couples.

Hilton Head Beach is the BEST - wide and flat and perfect for walking and biking. Nearby golf is second to none and the location in Sea Pines plantation affords many opportunities for sightseeing, dining, tennis, and boating. Take a dolphin boat tour where sightings are guaranteed. Watch the incredible sunrises and sunsets and enjoy wonderful tropical libations. A wonderful vacation is guaranteed!

Room Tip: There are only a few rooms with great ocean views, but it never hurts to ask!

Very nice large, clean villa located in Sea Pines in Hilton Head right on the beach. The villa was very spacious and we would stay here again. The grounds are very pretty and bike rentals were right on the property.

We have been visiting Hilton Head for a number of years at various timeshare locations in the Forest Beach area. While we have visited Sea Pines on each of our trips for day trips, this was our first opportunity to stay inside Sea Pines. This is an area of Hilton Head that we really enjoy,

Our favorite times to come to Hilton Head are May and September. The weather is always nice and it is quieter on HHI during these months of the year without the summer crowds.

Monarch is about a mile inside Sea Pines and sets directly on the ocean. The grounds are beautifully maintained with lots of trees, foliage and flowers. All the units surround a lagoon and pool area. It is visually appealing to look out over from your balcony. Views of the ocean and beach can probably be enjoyed from most units, although filtered through the trees and shrubbery. Everything is extremely clean and well-manicured at this resort.

The units are fresh and clean with updated and modern furnishings, carpeting, appliances and amenities. There is a planned resort renovation beginning in December 2012. It's hard to believe since everything seemed to be in like-new condition. This was our first stay in a Marriott timeshare. The Marriott-standard was evident throughout the units and grounds. We were greeted with a smile and friendly attitude by all staff we encountered.

There were activities scheduled throughout each day for everyone. There was a heated lap pool and free form pool, with three hot tubs. There were game tables, shuffleboard, corn hole setups and bikes for rent. WIFI was free in the units.

Our stay was very enjoyable with perfect weather. We look forward to our next visit to Hilton Head and the Monarch.

Room Tip: We were in the Magnolia building on the third floor. We had pool, lagoon and ocean views from our b...

This is not a large resort only the staff and activities are. They pamper you and keep the activities going for the kids. Hey it rained 4 of the 7 days we were there (Isaac) but fun activities for the kids made it great even with the rain. The villas although smaller than the newer Vacation Club Villas were very clean updated and enjoyable. The Monarch is next to the Public Beach (no problem-the beaches are huge) you can visit the grill for a quick snack or dinner with the family- also has a bar. The trolley runs from this location to Harbor Town and South Beach- and of course Bike trails everywhere.
Our vacation was wonderful
Go here you will enjoy it and be pleasantly surprise how the staff makes you feel.

I just returned from a two night stay at Monarch (9/2-9/4). I paid for the nights through Marriott; I have no connection to the timeshare program. Although I've spent ~800 nights in Marriott hotels this was my first time at a Vacation Club property. I was impressed overall. We visit HH often but we usually stay at one of the resort hotels. This time, my parents joined us so we needed an extra bedroom. This unit very clean and was the perfect size for the five of us. The interior of our unit was in good shape (with the exception of several small maintenance issues that were promptly addressed). The main room and the two bedrooms had large flatscreen TVs with a good channel selection. The appliances were in great shape. Since we were renting nightly we received daily housekeeping service (towels, toiletries etc) and they even started the dishwasher for us! The unit was pre-stocked with paper towels, coffee and dishwashing detergent. The beach directly in front of the hotel seemed a bit crowded but we walked 50 yards and practically had the beach to ourselves. The resort had a wine and cheese reception on Sunday which was an unexpected bonus. Overall, this was a great value for the price because we would have needed two rooms and would have had to pay resort/parking fees at our usual HH oceanfront hotels. Sea Pines is a terrific area (awesome bike trails!). This hotel is also about a 5 min drive to Coligny which is a plus. I'm giving this property 4/5 for two reasons: The above-mentionded maintenance issues (which were promptly addressed) and the internet service: it was serviceable for emails but seemed to drop out occasionally. Otherwise, this is a terrific property. I will recommend it to anyone!

I am a long time Marriott hotel customer and multiple time share owner. Although this location is noteworthy (location to the beach), the rest of this place is a complete dump!!!!. It is not a full service resort, the decor is abominable, with chipped, cheap tile flores that dont feel clean. An old pool (that does not look clear and clean), virtually no lobby, No towel service (wash everything yourself) - by the way in a linoleum stained laundry room. I own in Palm Desert, Hawaii, and Las Vegas, and by no stretch is this up to the Marriott standard. Every place I have every traded to in the Marriott chain is an A+. This is a C--. I would NEVER recommend this. They do have planned upgrades, but with a property this old there is no way it can be rennovated effectively. Stay clear unless you like old, musty, crusty properties. The previous reviewers must have been deaf, dumb and bllind. No exaggerations here. This is not up to the Marriott standard and they should either sell or level this place and start over. We'll see is trip advisor is un-biased and publish this
