“Very relaxing week at Barony Beach”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2009

My husband and I and our adult children stayed at Barony Beach 6/28/09 - 7/5/09. We are multiple week Marriott Vacation Club owners and traded into Barony Beach. I did my research ahead of time so I expected to be put in the Garden Villas. We were given a pool view room on the 1st floor in the Jasmine building. The 1st floor is actually the 2nd floor since the parking garage is under the building. We liked being able to take the stairs to our room and not have to wait on the elevator. The villas are goregous and very spacious. The tram service to the beach is actually a golf cart. We did take the golf cart to the beach a few times. It's nice knowing that service is available. The walk to the beach is not bad at all. It's only a few minutes further of a walk than the other buildings in the main part of the resort. Unless you purchased an oceanfront room at Barony, your view will be similar to the Garden View villas, overlooking a pool or garden area, and you will still have to walk to the beach. The main pool by the beach is very small and crowded. We liked our pool in the Garden View section much better. Never a crowd or a fight for a chair. We rented an umbrella from the lifeguard in front of the beach bar and hung out there for most of the week. We could listen to the afternoon entertainment from our chairs on the beach. We planned to rent bikes and participate in some of the activities offered at the resort but just never got around to it. There are plenty of grills and picnic tables available for use. Overall, it was a relaxing vacation. I would return to Barony Beach again.

We are Vacation Club Owners and swapped into the Barony for a trip to HHI. This is our third trip to HHI and our first and last at Barony. Before we booked/swapped we looked at the Barony Marriott site and saw it said 'Atlantic Ocean on-site' so we were pretty excited.
We called and asked about the possibility of getting ocean front and were told to arrive early for our best chance. We got here at 12:00 and were asked to wait- we did until the normal check-in tim of 4 and they then placed us in the Garden Villas- across the street, beyond the Westin, with no direct beach access. We were told we could ride a tram to the beach from our building.
We have small children and elderly parents, so riding a tram would be great- if there were less of us, or more trams- so we ended up walking the 15 minutes to the beach. We also had to walk to the main buildings (15 min) for all the activities and to be near the pool with the restaurant and the bar.
The only activities on our side was a kid putting challenge and a smores making thing.
When we complained, our complaints were dismissed because the actual Barony owners get preference of ocean front and the beach villas- all others including rentals and time-share swaps get the crappy garden villas.
We were considering buying another week, but after this experience, it WILL NOT be with Marriott.

I was very impressed with the quality of the villas. We stayed in a courtyard view (the lowest price) and I was afraid we’d have a view of a parking lot or maintenance depot, but instead we had a beautiful view of the garden pool area. All of the villas face inward, so no units should have bad views. The villas have a great layout, very spacious, with comfy Marriott bedding. The courtyard view villas are the furthest from the beach, and it’s a shorter walk if you go through the Westin property - don’t use the official Barony Beach path, as it is much longer. There are beach umbrellas for rent from the lifeguards for $30 per day (lowered to $18 per day if you commit in advance to more than one day), so bring cash with you to the beach. The cost is outrageous, but I’d recommend it since it really makes the beach more enjoyable. After we checked out I noticed something on the Barony Beach map about umbrella and chair rentals available at the Barony Beach’s market store starting at about $8 per day. I don’t know the details of what is offered, but I’d definitely investigate that before renting from the lifeguards. The pool by our villa was almost deserted, but the pool by the beach got very crowded in the afternoon. We didn’t try the food at the Barony Beach pool due to the crowd, and instead we ate next door at the Westin’s outdoor restaurant (very relaxing). Overall I was very impressed by the Barony Beach property and accommodations and would definitely go back.

Overall, we had a great time in Hilton Head but I do not believe that had anything to do with the Barony Beach Resort.

We are MVC owners in Vegas and traded our week into the Barony.

ROOMS: We had request eda high floor room with an oceanview. I had been told that those were normally taken by owners but that they would do the best they could! Well, the best they could was giving us the furthest away room from the beach and it was on the first floor. We weren't thrilled but we thought we would make due since we don't like to complain (maybe that really was the last room!).

My husband and I are VERY loyal to Marriott and even refer to ourselves are Marriott junkies but this place really did not do it for us. The suites were HUGE but were not very well taken care of. There was no apparently dust or dirty dishes but there were grimy areas in the showers (eww) and deck. The entire place just looked very aged.

We knew what to expect from a Vacation Resort....no restaurant, no daily cleaning services, so no complaints in that area.

POOLS: We didn't even attempt to visit the main pool b/c it seemed very crowded. We have a 7 month old and the back pool was slightly better for him. Also, they only supply towels at the main pool - if you go to the smaller pools, you have to bring your own towel. I didn't like this concept but we made do.

BEACH: They do sell chairs for (i think) $30 a day. We knew that from reading reviews so brought our own chairs, tent for the baby. The only thing was that it was a VERY long walk from our room to the beach. It was definitely a hassle to have to carry everything that far. They do have a shuttle that can take you from our building to the beach but we were only able to get it once....the other times it wasn't running or we waiting and it never came!

Overall it was an OK resort. We went and did the timeshare presentation over at the SurfWatch and we loved it ....we actually jokingly ask if we could switch resorts. Much more modern and I believe less villas so less of a crowd! If we return to Hilton Head I think we will try the SurfWatch instead!

I hope that helps! Feel free to message me with specific questions.

We stayed at the barony Beach Club the week of Memorial Day for three nights (Tues-Fri). Our stay was great. While we did not participate in any of the resort activities, we had fun just relaxing at the pool with the beach view (we were in Morning Glory). There are lots of pools and jacuzzis to choose from and easy access to the beach (which was not crowded). Loved our rooms. The only downside is that the cell phone reception is spotty (AT&T). I would highly recommend staying here.

We have been a Marriott owner for 8 years and presently own in Aruba. We thought of upgrading to Ocean front but after ths week decided not to and we are even considering the sale of this property. We purposely booked this week so there would not be as many children. When trying to relax at the pool over the last several days, there were kids yelling, parents yelling at their kids and splashing to those sitting near by. We went to all pools and even the hot tub and there were kids there too. Several of the adults (without kids) responded the same way. We have children and understand the family concept and directly asked the Marriott individuals at the desk regarding the adult pool. The responce was "nothing" except I apologize this is not an option. It seems to me as a consumer and the bell curve of the mean population our recommendations would be at least considered or acknowledged. We would not recommend this Timeshare to any of our friends who would be looking for a relaxed week. I understand Marriott can not do anything with the customers who bring their children, but at least Mariott could take into consideration the babyboomer as a consumer when designing and setting up this timeshare.

Our 1 week stay at the Barony Beach Club was simply wonderful; the entire property is lush, tropical, and beautiful. Our oceanfront room was perfect for us, our 3 children, and my 76 yr old mother. The staff was always courteous and helpful when needed.
The rooms are beautiful and equipped with everything we needed. The beds were heavenly as well...
The weekly activity calendar was a bonus for our kids; each day had several fun things to do, either free or for a reasonable cost. The bike rental on the property was super; we rented bikes for all of us for the whole week and it was great having them available for an early morning ride or a late-night jaunt down the beach!
The beach itself is beautiful and since the Barony only has the Westin next door and residences on either sides, the beach was never overly crowded. The pools were great for the kids (indoor and out) with plenty of lounge chairs to choose from. The snack bar at the pool and the Marketplace store in the Barony were a bit pricey but you pay for convenience! We made a trip to Walmart (5 min. drive) and made sure to get everything we needed.
Although the Barony is set a ways off of the main road, the drive into the resort is beautiful; being oceanfront is well worth it!
We will definitely be returning to the Barony when visiting Hilton Head again!
