“Quiet and Relaxing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

Our family spent three nights here for a long weekend to just 'get away'. This Disney resort is perfect for that. It's fairly quiet and never felt crowded. We stayed in a 2 bedroom, loved the space, had everything we needed, including a washer and dryer. There isn't an overload of Disney theming which is fine. The pool was wonderfully heated and the hot tub was large enough for all 8 of us. It sits back off the main road in a lovely treed setting, very tranquil for just relaxing.

Nothing to do has never been this fun. My family and I traveled there for Labor Day weekend, and were not disappointing at all. First let me explain what I didn't want: I didn't want the hustle and bustle of the Orlando parks, nor did I want to be rushed into cramming in 100 activities into a 4 hour day, nor did I want to get raked over the coals for food, snacks and parking. And last but not least I didn't really want to have characters walking by and music playing its a small world after all 24/7 from hidden speakers. Mission accomplished. The Disney Hilton head resort is for families or couples who want to get away from all that, and enjoy a well maintained, clean and comfortable resort with enough activities for the young ones and all nature focused.

We arrived Saturday morning, were greeted and given our "passport", basically check in stuff. Having read up on this resort we opted to bring our own bicycles, and it paid off big time. (They also offer a shuttle to the beach house if biking isn't your thing) With our room not ready we unloaded the bikes and took the 1.5 mile ride to the Disney Beach house. All of it connected by easily marked paved bike trails. You have to show your key at a guard station just to get onto the beach road access, then proceed to the Disney beach house. Great Disney beach house complete with pool, snack bar, bar, and deck overlooking the beach. We rode our bikes and baby trailer onto the sand, while we didn't rent the beach chairs and umbrellas, (we brought out own) they are available. The beach at Hilton Head is fantastic, very tranquil and not crowded at all. We enjoyed the afternoon there, then went to the beach house for a late lunch before returning to our room once it was ready.
We had a studio room, I was concerned about it being too small, but it was very well appointed, and had a queen bed and also a pull out sofabed. The bathroom was large and decorated in a rustic camping style. And of course the TV was on with the Disney resort channel blaring (some things I guess you cant run away from)
My other concern was food. Many posts on here and other blogs complained that there were no options on site. Its sort of true. However, (while there are no dedicated Disney on site restaurants) there are so many dining option on Hilton head, why anyone would expect or want a Disney meal when they can go out and explore is beyond me. All of which are accessible by bike trail or you can drive to them. This resort does have many snack bar options, but for real dinner options they have a few restaurants within a 5 minute walk, or you can drive/bike to the others.

The staff was amazingly nice, people we would bike by would say hello, in all its Disney Lite, and really a place to relax and unwind with the quality that Disney is known for. My son is only 1 so our activities were limited other than the pools and the beach, both of which are quite stunning. But we did get a calendar at check in with the activities for the week, by day and time. If you have a 4-15yr old, then this might be an option for you. They also offer kayaking, dolphin tours etc. But our time was spent mostly at the beach house and the beach.

So if you are expecting an electric parade down main street, this aint for you. However if you just want to unwind, spend some quality time biking around the island, spending time on the beach, and enjoying the hospitality Disney has to offer, without the spectacle of people eating giant turkey legs while walking in an amusement park, then this is for you.

Room Tip: 1215 is a great studio, quiet and close to the exit for access to beach house.

Many folks probably don't know that Disney has a place in Hilton Head. Now of course, it is not a Theme Park, but it is Disney quality throughout. Lots of fun things to do with the kids and the great staff make this a great destination. We live in Charleston SC and still go even though it is only two hours away. They have lots of ameneties and even have a free boat dock if you are close enough to boat to it!!! We love it and I would highly recommend to others.

Room Tip: If you have children, stay close to the pool, if a romantic get away, request building 13 with water...

Our family stayed at the resort on our way down to Florida. We had a two bedroom villa. The room was clean and very roomy. The kitchen provided everything you would need to cook any meal! My kids loved the pool and the slide. The staff was very nice. The resort had activities planned for the kids all day. It was a beautiful place to visit. Driving outside the resort, we were able to find food stores, restaurants and pharmacies. Definitely coming back!

I have been a dvc member for 7 years and this was my first time at hilton head. We got married in June and decided to take our honeymoon here, we were very disappointed. This resort does not live up to the Disney name.

The rooms are very dark and outdated. The T.V. was the size of a small computer screen, the smallest i've seen in a hotel. The noise travels between floors as mentioned in other posts. We are constantly hearing the walking, jumping and running of the people above us. The marsh occasionally smells when the tide goes out. It's really unpleasant at time but is to be expected.

If your handicapped, this resort is really difficult to get around. The only rooms with an elevator are at the main lodge, furthest from the pool. The pool area is difficult to get to the bathroom via the handicap ramp, which has a full height gate in the middle of the ramp. I would imagine it's difficult to open from a wheelchair. All the rest of the rooms are stairs, plan on lugging your luggage up the stairs to your room. There is no bell service!

The pool is small compared to other DVC resorts. Not much seating, hardly any seating in the shade, and only 4 tables to eat at under the deck with no view. The bathrooms/locker rooms, food window, and soda machine is upstairs, out of the line of sight of parents, and difficult to get to. Especially for the handicapped. Very poorly designed. We tried to get a spot at the pool just before lunch, every chair was taken and the pool was packed. This was on a wednesday when most kids are in school. I cant imagine how crowded it would be durning the summer months. We had to get in the car and drive to the Beach House pool instead.

The Beach House is nice and usually less crowded. Plenty of seats in the shade, as well as the sun. The pool is decent size and bathrooms are clean. The drawback is the pool is 1 mile across the street. You either have to drive or take the shuttle. Parking is very limited. On a Saturday we tried to go at noon. The parking lot was full and had to drive back and take the shuttle. The disappointment is the shuttle only runs to 5:00pm which really limits your time at the pool or beach.

They have a backyard BBQ once a week on tuesdays. Its buffet style. The food was decent, the $26.00 per adult is pricey, but the ease of eating on site was convenient. We stopped by one of the movie nights and they barely have any seats. People were bringing their kitchen chairs out of their room or standing. I would guess their is seating for maybe 24 people. Once again. Minimal seating.

The only nice thing is the boardwalk (Shelter Cove) restaurants across the bridge. There are plenty of restaurants walking distance but they are a little pricey and not very kid friendly. They are high end restaurants featuring mostly seafood. We made reservations but probably didn't need to even on a Friday night. The restaurants are mostly empty. Figure on driving somewhere to eat or ordering food to the room for the kids. also, The nightlife seems to be a very short window, even on weekends 7:00pm-9:30pm. The only positive. There is a little bit of entertainment for the kids and a small ice cream shop.

Out of all the DVC resort, this one really lacks the comfort of the others. Considering everything you will have to drive to, they should make it more comfortable at the resort. More on site food options, more seating all around, and better accessibility and assistance for guests.

We will definately not be coming back, I think we will be going back to Disney next time!

Room Tip: I would go somewhere else

We think that Disney's Hilton Head resort provides an enjoyable place to have a family vacation. By way of background, we are DVC members and have stayed at Disney's Bay Lake Tower (Disney World) and Aulani (Hawaii) resorts over the past twelve months. This context is important as while Hilton Head provides a laid back and relaxing place to vacation, it does not offer an equivalent service or facility level comparable to the two aforementioned resorts. Issues have been well chronicled in previous posts, but I would highlight two areas that deserve specific mention. First, the on-site food offering is extremely limited. There are two snack bars with limited hours on property. Of course, you have a kitchen and can prepare meals, but we like to eat out when we go on vacation. Second, the rooms are a touch on the dated side and you can hear people walking in the unit above.

We had a room in the Live Oak Lodge. We liked the fact that we had covered parking and the elevator was a huge help; we have a 16 month old. Overall, this wouldn't be our first place to revisit, but we would not hesitate to provide it a qualified recommendation.

This was our first stay as DVC members outside of Orlando. As always, Disney did not disappoint. Tons of activities for the kids and ours loved everything they participated in. I can't say enough about the recreation staff at the pool. They were so wonderful with our kids and others at the resort. Limited dining options on resort but the area has so many great restaurants we didn't mind. Our room was a 2 bedroom villa and it was fantastic. Clean, well stocked and plenty of space for our family. We enjoyed renting bikes and riding to the Beach House so we never used the shuttle system. We enjoyed the separation of the resort from the beach. It gave us another area to explore. The view of the marsh is beautiful and I am glad the resort is located there as opposed to being directly on the beach. We would love to stay here again!
