This is our first visit to Hilton Head island and we are so glad that we learned about the Pine Forest preserve from other visitors reviews on Tripadvisor. We wanted to see the wild life as part of this sanctuary so we took the alligator boat tour that is run by the H2O company. The ride was one hour with a very knowledgeable guide that provided a lot of information on all the local wildlife such as the alligators, turtles, osprey etc. We enjoyed the peace and serenity of the area and the beauty of the wild flowers. Planning to come back again using bikes as there are a lot of bike trails. Lovely place. Highly recommend planning a visit when visiting Hilton Head Island.

If you're staying in Sea Pines, there is no additional fee for the Forest Preserve. If you're not staying there, it's $5 plus $1/bike. There are a lot of well-marked and well-maintained trails that you can walk, bike and/or horseback ride through. There are boardwalks in a number of areas. The lakes have turtles and alligators. If you're a birder, there are some interesting birds to see (I spotted a Belted Kingfisher diving into the water at one lake and a Pileated Woodpecker along a trail I was walking). There are all types of waterfowl. The only thing I thought was missing were benches along the trails to take a break or to just sit and enjoy nature. I'll be walking those trails again on my next visit to Hilton Head.

What a beautiful dive to the lighthouse. We saw lots of alligators and turtles. What a great job at keeping nature pure.We will definitely return through every visit to this island.

Be advised that this is within Sea Pines, so if you aren't staying in that community they charge to enter ($5 per car plus $1 per bike if you have any). We rode through the preserve on our bicycles and it was all easy going. The bikes have to follow the car path, so occasionally we would have to get over and yield, but otherwise a very easy way to get some great views of marshland, wildlife to include gators (saw some swimming), turtles, birds, butterfly garden, etc. Since we biked our way over, we were able to leave our bikes at a bike rack and walk some of the trails as well. It is a great way to spend a few hours, especially if you have kids! Walking paths are very well maintained and wide, the history of the shell circle was very interesting.

Enjoyed a lovely walk through the reserve in late afternoon. Only saw a handful of other people. Such an unspoilt environment. Unfortunately we didn't see any sort of wild life in over two hours but apart from that it was a lovely place to explore.
