We have visited Hilton Head several times over the last 4 years but are always on the lookout for good seafood. And we found a winner on this trip.

It's predominantly a seafood restaurant (with a very nice selection of good seafood - between the regular menu and their daily specials), but there were some good-looking non-seafood choices on their menu as well. The service was excellent, and the price was very reasonable. The atmosphere appealed to us, too ... relaxed and non-pretentious, perfect complement to the island's atmosphere.

The Black Marlin will definitely be at the top of our list of restaurants to visit when we return to Hilton Head.

Started next door at the Sunrise Cafe, but the wait was too long and we had a golf tourney to go to.This place did not disappoint. Mimosas were good, breakfast was excellent. Bagels and lox served perfectly; wife had seafood benedict which she loved. outdoor seating is avialable, but it is not a knock out view and can get windy. The bar is very comfy and is where i would plant myself next time. Just have to know where to find it. I would do lunch here for sure as well.

I had the scallops and they were well prepared. The menu was pretty basic seafood, pasta and beef. The ambience was non-offensive.

Read solid reviews for Black Marlin and tried it for our family of four (two kids under six). The menu had a broad selection of seafood and standard american fare, and the appetizers and salads were actually pretty creative (yes, the sushi nachos that people crow about *are* good -- but the downside it is an 'artsy' (read: sparse) dish).

As is usually the case these days, my server insisted that their tuna was "sushi grade" -- the third bite into the sushi salad was anything but: I got an end piece of seared tuna that was more tendons than flesh. Ugghh. My favorite fish became everyone's favorite a decade or so ago, and now it is near-impossible to get a good cut of it.

My wife found her surf and turf (filet and stuffed shrimp) to be very good -- preparation and flavor was spot-on. The kids' menu is a little spendy for what it is (probably a buck or so higher than each item should be, even in a tourist town), but no big deal.

Creative beachy/sailing-themed drinks menu. Lots of seating in different rooms (bar, dining, outdoor) and a casual but attentively-decorated atmosphere.

Overall a good- to very good spot. Wouldn't have reservations telling someone they should expect a good time there ... but we haven't done enough dining on HHI yet to say you should necessarily pick this one over something else.
