“So cheesy, so hilarious”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

This place just has to make you laugh. Cheap and cheerful, real family place. Huge rooms, but so, so cheesy! King suite is actually 2 rooms, 2 full bathrooms, but walls are thin. Most stuff even worked.

We drove a long way that day and were tired and wanted a nice glass of wine. When I asked the waitress what labels of white, she told me there is Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio. That's it. One choice for each. Okay, so we ordered a bottle of Pinot for $12.95; how bad can it be? It was hilarious. The waitress brought us a 1.5 liter bottle of California Pinot Grigio. It actually was fine!

Got there late and they put us in one of the far back rooms. Walked in past the huge spider hanging in the front door to a room that had dead roaches and other bugs in all the corners of the room. The sleeper sofa mattress had a 12 inch rip at the corner. No sheets or pillows for the sleeper. Bath room had a smell to it. DISGUSTING!!!. Asked for another room. One bedroom. No sleeper sofa in the living room. My kids had to sleep on two love seats. Bathroom toilet did not work. Had to fill trash can in the tub to flush the toilet. DON'T PLAY WITH THE LOCKS EITHER. You can easily lock yourself out of your room and your key won't open the door. You have to get security to unlock it for you. And that may take up to 45 minutes for them to get there. But when you check in they give you a complimentary bottle of champagne. Like I said in my title, the local Board of Health should investigate this place. DON'T GO !!! The tourist trap is ok but stay at another hotel or motel

Room Tip: Stay away from the rooms across the street. Ask to see the rooms ahead of time before accepting.

My wife and our daughter were on our way to Charleston, SC. We had originally planned on saying in Lumberton, NC, but decided we could get a few more miles in before settling in for the night. We ended up staying at the South of the Border.

I'll be honest, if you are looking for something fancy or luxurious, this is not the place to stay. Go up to the road to Lumberton and find a Marriott or Hilton there. If you are looking for a cheap place to rest for the night with a bit of roadside nostalgia to it, then this is your place. Sure the towels are thin and not soft and the television is dated, but there's just something about staying in an old school motor lodge which takes you back in time to the 50's and 60's when this place was likely built.

The bed was nothing great, but provided us with a sound night sleep. The hotel is very quiet and solidly built (so you can't hear your neighbors). The room we had opened into a cool courtyard that I bet would be great to relax in during the summer. The water in the shower was hot and provided us with good showers. The staff members were attentive and very friendly. What more could you ask for at $59 a night?

Overall, the South of the Border was a great place to stop for a single night stay. If you are looking to spend more time in the area that just one night, I'd suggest going somewhere more luxurious.

This hotel is as great as ever- clean, comfortable rooms and an excellent value. We stayed here for only one night when all smaller motels along Rt. 96 were filled due to the holiday weekend. This will be a regular stop in the future. The cost of the room was only $59.95 for two double beds- I consider this cheap, considering that rooms at smaller chain motels (often dirty) along the Rt. 95 corridor cost about the same. The room even had a covered carport, an added convenience during inclement weather (it was raining when we checked in). As far as I'm concerned, this hotel can't be beat.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the steakhouse- they're a little cheaper and identical to the rooms nearer t...

Ignore the millions of billboards. Do not stop here. Just keep driving, even if you are tired or hungry. This place is nasty and WAAAYYYY past its prime. The shops all sell the same over-priced junk (ponchos, cheap toys, stuff that looks like it belongs in the free box at a garage sale). The hotel and restaurants are disgusting! I wouldn't stay here again even if you paid me to! This could be location shot for a horror flick, it's that bad!!

This was a spur of the moment hotel change. The motel is old, but the rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. There is an indoor pool (called the Pleasure Dome), and a sauna, but no hot tub. It was inexpensive at $50 for two double beds. There was a carport right outside the room, and the grounds were well-decorated with cactus and southern-style trees. There is an outdoor pool, but it wasn't open as we were there in February and it was still rather chilly. Lots of shops and attractions all within walking distance.

The smell in the room was enough to send my 14 year old back out to the car. There is a full time police officer on site for security. We walked around and checked out the shops, but when we went to the convenience store and found the place to be mostly empty we went back out in the car in search of some snacks.

We drove down the road away from I-95 to find a massage parlor, adult bookstore and several strip joints. These were no more than a half mile away. We ended up leaving an hour after we checked in. I was happy to leave them my money and leave Hep C free.

This place was not what I remember from when I was a kid. Get your gas tank filled and get out fast.

Room Tip: Don't stay.
