This is a great chance to see the beautiful plantations and waterways of the low country. Captain Dave was funny and informative and definately knew his stuff. The cruise is mostly in quiet waterways so no worries about motion sickness (athough there is some time on the open water as well). A great side trip from Myrtle Beach.

We took a multi-generational family group on this tour. Was great! The Capt'n and his wife were grascious hosts, very knowledgable, and fun. Got great photos, bags of seashells, and learned some history too. Get to the dock on time, walk as far and as fast as you can, as directed by the Capt'n, but be sure to get back to the boat on time to be respectful of your other passengers. May not be suitable for infants, toddlers will do okay if adventurous.

My wife and I have been vacationing in the area for the past several years, and we always make it a point to take Captain Rod's Lighthouse Shell Island Tour each time we come down. The tour is different each time we take it, because the shells are always different, as well as the narrative we get from the captain as we cruise to and from the barrier island. A particular advantage to taking the cruise on this vessel, versus the other cruise company that also goes to Shell Island, is the fact Captain Rod's boat is equipped with a bathroom; a huge plus for us older folk!! In addition, this boat has a cover, so all occupants are in the shade, instead of being out and baking in the sun. Be advised -- bring along your bug spray, as there are times the flies are out and biting on the island. We've been there when the flies haven't been a problem, and we've also been there when they've been around and biting, but the spray keeps them at bay. This is a fun adventure to participate in and we always look forward to going each year!!

This ended up being a 4 hour tour for us. At first there isn't much to see when heading out to the island, but the Captain does a great job telling the history of the area. The lighthouses are interesting and the island is gorgeous. Make your way around the east side of the island to find more shells - larger and unbroken. Lots of local wildlife - blue/white crab, horseshoe crabs, starfish.. and drift wood. On the way back we saw gators and dolphins. Great nature photography!

Went on the lighthouse shell Island tour with 3 friends. I enjoyed the trip out and back but could not enjoyed the island for the nasty flies. I was walking on the beach and suddenly a SWARM of flies attack me.Could NOT get rid of them and they were out for dinner. ME! So make sure you take some raid and mosquito spray. It is a nice boat trip but make sure you bring a jacket just in case the wind gets cooler. You do just a drive by for the lighthouse which is disappointing. All in all its a nice way to spend the afternoon. By the way, if you go on a Monday many stores and restuarants are closed early.
