“Beautiful Timeshare condo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2010

We stayed at Atalaya Towers in mid-October and the weather was perfect. We couldn't have been happier with the unit. We were in (504) and it was furnished with very nice, sturdy furniture. The units have three bedrooms and can accommodate 8 people easily and privately. The washer and dryer are very expensive and worked wonderfully. Now my wife wants one just like them. Drat! The view from the large balcony is awesome. There are no scheduled activities at Atalaya, but there is plenty to do for people of all ages in the Myrtle Beach/ Garden City area. By the way, mid-October is considered "off season" and there were plenty of entertainment, food and golfing bargains.

We stayed here in May on an RCI exchange. After reading the reviews, I was confident that the room would be nice since it was an RCI exchange. We stayed in 1506 and enjoyed it.

We decided to go back to GC in September and found a condo at Atalya for rent at a great price. I was a little hesitant because of some reviews I had seen. The Garden City Realty website had virtual tours and we felt pretty good once we saw that.

We stayed in 1004 and are enjoying it more than the RCI room. It is a rental, but the owners must spend a decent amount of time here because it is well taken care of and has many homey touches. It has mutilple appliances, dishes, pot and pans, etc. It is much brighter than the other unit we stayed in.

It has no retaurant or room service, but there are plenty of places nearby. Not a problem for us.

The only complaint is the bed. It is a king and is very soft - but I guess that's how they like it. So if you are interested, be sure to look at the video tour and other reviews.

Defender rents the Timeshare portions of the condo resort. Those units are all very nice. There are only about 20 units available that are timeshare units. This complex is right on the beach....you only have to walk a few steps; not the long boadwalks to deal with. The view is fantastic. It is centralized for shopping and eating and Broadway at the Beach is not far away. Lots for the kids of all ages to do in the area. The complex is older but is kept clean. It is not a full service resort, but I never had to go to the front desk for any reason. The units are all roomy and we had plenty or room. My kitchen was updated w/ granite and new appliances. It was well stocked.

Atalaya Towers was fairly decent, (except advertised "high-speed internet" was pretty much non-existent), but I agree with the previous review. The only good thing about 1702 was the view! The beds were so awful you would do better sleeping on the floor...except that the carpet was so worn and disgusting I wouldn't recommend that either. The most comfortable furniture was the plastic chairs on the deck.

I have stayed at many places in Garden City (Water's Edge, Royal Garden, Horizon East, etc...) and usually have an exceptional time. Atalaya tower's rooms are a bit smaller and the bed in the master was terrible. The decor in our room was good and the view was beautiful. But my frustration is due to an incident that happened on Friday my teen daughter, niece and I were going up the elevator - my niece got off at her condo on the 10th floor. When the door closed the elevator made a strange sound and then started vibrating terribly. It started up making a strange noise and shaking and vibrating. It stopped at the 15th floor (our floor) and the inside door opened but not the outside door. The elevator continued shaking terribly. We pressed the alarm - nothing. We held it in. We tried to open the call box but it was stuck. We pressed the alarm again. I have been stuck in an elevator before but never with it shaking like this one. We finally (working together and pulling so hard we fell back when it opened) we got the call box open. It connected to 911 and we explained the situation. Approximately 10 minutes later the person from the office came and called through the door asking if we called 911 - we said we did. He tried for a few minutes and finally got the door open. His first words to us were – there was no need to call 911. He never apologized. When I went down to apologize to the firemen and to let them know we were free – they told me I should have called them and that the management was angry that we called 911 because they have had several incidents with the elevator in the last few months and Atalaya didn’t want to deal with it. I understand that things happen – but there was no excuse for our treatment by the manager on duty. He did not apologize or check to see if we were okay. Instead, he was frustrated WITH US because we used the call button in the elevator. Unbelievable!

We stayed in unit 1702 and I think everything in there was from the 1950's. All furniture was completely worn out and all mattresses were horrible. Dryer vents into the unit making it about 95 degrees in there when you dry a load of towels. Mildew in the bathrooms and in the kitchen cabinets. Carpets and rugs were filthy. The only good thing about this unit was the view.

I stayed in one of the RCI units...room 804 to be exact. All units face the beach and the ocean is just a few steps away. You can literally throw a rock from your balcony into the ocean (but don't do that - its dangerous). I fell asleep every night listening to the waves hitting the beach. The water is that close.

The unit is nicely equipped with a full kitchen and appliances - all in good working condition. Comfortable living room furniture. All units have 3 bedrooms with the master bedroom opening up to the beach balcony.

Property offers both an indoor and outdoor pool, hottub, and sundeck. All were awesome.

The area is much quieter than Myrtle Beach. A pier and small commercial district are 1/2 mile to the sourth. Myrtle Beach is 5 miles to the north. But the best place to visit is Murrell's inlet about 5 mils to the south.. Its a giant marsh area that is packed with great seafood restaurants all connected by a wooden walkway. Dont go to the tourist traps in Myrtle Beach...go to Murrell's Inlet for the good stuff.
