“Not for the go-go family”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

We have been going to Fripp for several years, we go off season due to our work schedules and everything on the island is pretty much closed as far as food courts, etc. Fripp Island is for folks who enjoy the way things used to be in the low country, before Starbucks, Publix and the new redone Hilton Head took over. Ride around in the morning on the golf cart and feed the deer apples, take photos of the alligators and play boardgames with your family. Remember life before WiFi? Well, this is that world. Thankfully, we found it! No the kiddie pool doesn't have a fancy slide or water features because they do not really want the crowds of the other attraction based islands. Neither do we:) The whole place is designed for families to crab, fish, golf, eat, swim, play etc together. We sit on the beach, drink wine, eat at Bonita, enjoy the beautiful landscape and quiet and play with our young son. We do not care about the lack of fancy amenities because we go to relax! Rent a golf cart, book a house via VRBO.com and bring groceries. Fripp is beautiful and true relaxation.

Room Tip: Rent a private house through VRBO.com Make sure you ask if they have beach access all day!

Fripp Island was absolutely delightful for our family vacation. The staff made booking the house, checking-in, and checking-out easy. The house was in impeccable condition and exactly as promised. Four kids were with us on the trip. Having access to all of the pools and so many bike paths gave the kids plenty to do when they wanted a break from the beach. Even though we were visiting in peak season, the beach was never crowded and parking close to the beach was a piece of cake.

As other reviewers mentioned, the island is a healthy trek from a grocery store and the markets on the island provide only the bare essentials, so it is smart to plan ahead and get your shopping done before you hit the island.

We just ended a one week stay on Fripp, the last full week in August. We rented a home privately at Ocean Point and the home was lovely. What we didn't know was that this was the first week of "off season" at Fripp. While there were no crowds, there were also no amenities. The food court, restaurant, and snack bar at Beach Club were closed Monday through Thursday. The Grill at Ocean Pointe was open 7am-6pm leaving us with Bonito Boat House as our only dining option. While servers were very friendly meals here took forever to receive and were average at best. The "grocery store" is an exageration and very pricey so you still need to drive the 15 or so miles to Publix on St Helena. Pools are not heated, there are zero hot tubs, snd every form of biting bug on earth seems to present at the pools! The best part of our trip was the ease of tennis court scheduling and a boating trip to Bulls Point (thank you marina staff for the tip!).
Lots of deer, aligators, and dolphins.

Ahh where to start... we stayed at the New Haven Villas on the North end, a Silver accomidation. From the moment we walked in the A/C did not work. After 3 repairmen and 2 days and 2 sweaty nights they moved us. Actually, we moved a weeks worth of food etc for 2 couples and 3 kids. Now that we have wasted the better part of 2 days. We head to the beach community access #1 where a resident had his truck and trailer parked acrosss the lot blocking parking and we listen to him complain about people parking next to his home. He volunteers that we can park there today. The local police drive by and I mention to them this guys problem and ask is the community map they give guests correct? Is this a community access #1 parking area? OF, Course they don't know but they speak with the homeowner and he says again it is fine to park there today of couse his truck and trailer have most of the spaces taken. I mention this to the Resort folks too but no one seems concerned. As another commenter said bring Groceries! Bonita is fine if a little pricy but they have a captive market and the wait can be a while unless you eat at 5pm. Oh, one last treat apparently if you park at New Haven they can give you a $50 ticket---thats right parked in an open area with no yellow lines and no signage saying no parking. The same area I had seen numerous cars all week. I get a ticket. I asked to have a manager call me twice no call back. I went the office to talk with a manager twice I got she is on the phone and then 15 minutes later I get she had to step out. Your mileage may vary but this is not what I go on vacation for!

Island wifi very unpredictable. Most restaurants closed until late May. Still very nice and laid back vacation.

I'm sure reviews vary depening on location and expectations.
May not be for everyone but my family loves this place and we think its worth a trip if you are considering places in this area.
We stayed in a nice 2 bedroom house after visiting for the first time last year.
Thought I'd list a few pros/cons- so you can make your own decision.
Pros +Quiet other than golf carts on the main roads
+ Nice beach- Stays pretty uncrowded. Dog friendly!
+ Activities for kids- Fishing, biking, boating, swimming, activity center
+ Wildlife- Birds, dolphins, alligators, deer
+ Golf courses and tennis facility
+ Marina

Cons - Amenity cards are a pain to deal with and you're locked out of most places w/o them
- Plan on bringing your own food as options on the island are very limited
- Pools can be crowded

Room Tip: Marsh views offer a great view of the sunset. If you rent make sure you know if a golf cart an/or a...

Our family has been coming to Fripp for years. My breathing slows and I feel my entire body relax as we enter the South Carolina lowcountry....there is no place more beautiful. Fripp is literally "the end of the road". It is at the end of a string of sea islands off the Carolina coast. The pace of life is much more gentle than Hilton Head and the natural beauty and wildlife will take your breath away. It is our refuge we need a break from the hurried pace of life.

We love to stay at John Fripp Villas as they are centrally located on the island, have the best beach front, and are close to amentities like tennis, the Beach Club, pools, etc....We normally stay in Phase III. On our last trip, we stayed in 139 John Fripp Villas. It is right on the ocean. When we walked in the front door, we were amazed to see the Atlantic ocean through the windows that went all the way across the wall facing the beach. The kitchen, breakfast area, and living area all have magnificent views of the beach. The layout of the villa was spacious and open. The kitchen has granite countertops and the cabinets appeared very new. There was also furniture in the living area that appeared to be brand new. The kitchen layout was great, and I loved cooking fresh seafood that we bought right off the island. The bedroom has a wonderful pillowtop mattress and slept very well. The bathroom was on the small side but the location and views more than made up for that.

There is a covered patio that looks over the ocean allowing you to enjoy the ocean breezes without being exposed to the sun. Our kids loved the grass area off the patio and had plenty of room to run, play bocce ball, and do gymnastics. They also loved laying in the grass at night to watch the stars....there were millions! The villa is right on the beach and it was easy for us to run back and forth for a drink or to get a camera or more sunscreen.

Fantastic trip! We can't wait to come back!

Room Tip: We love oceanfront locations but the oceanview villas in Phase III are nice too. On our last visit...
