Ideally I would rate the Tides somewhere between Average and Very Good, but there isn't a rating for just "Good". The Tides is an older hotel, and when a hotel reaches a certain age, it shows. That said, our room was clean and there was nothing objectionable about it or the hotel. The lobby is very interesting, the restaurant is fantastic (see my review of Blu), and the view of the beach and pier from our top-floor room was wonderful. It was a short drive into Charleston, so we found the Tides to be a nice alternative to staying in Charleston.
I think several events were going on during our stay, and sometimes it was difficult to find a parking space. We expected April to still be off-season, but there were lots of people in the hotel and on the beach.
The Tides is dog-friendly, with no weight limit and a flat fee of $85. I enjoyed walking on the beach with my dog in the early morning, and we enjoyed walking around Folly Beach. Dogs are allowed on the beach in April, when we visited, but I think there are restricted hours for dogs on the beach beginning in May.
