“Pet-friendly, with an awesome view of the ocean.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2013

Ideally I would rate the Tides somewhere between Average and Very Good, but there isn't a rating for just "Good". The Tides is an older hotel, and when a hotel reaches a certain age, it shows. That said, our room was clean and there was nothing objectionable about it or the hotel. The lobby is very interesting, the restaurant is fantastic (see my review of Blu), and the view of the beach and pier from our top-floor room was wonderful. It was a short drive into Charleston, so we found the Tides to be a nice alternative to staying in Charleston.

I think several events were going on during our stay, and sometimes it was difficult to find a parking space. We expected April to still be off-season, but there were lots of people in the hotel and on the beach.

The Tides is dog-friendly, with no weight limit and a flat fee of $85. I enjoyed walking on the beach with my dog in the early morning, and we enjoyed walking around Folly Beach. Dogs are allowed on the beach in April, when we visited, but I think there are restricted hours for dogs on the beach beginning in May.

Room Tip: Our top floor room was quiet and had a great view. All rooms have a view of the beach.

We are all so happy to hear that you enjoyed your beach vacation with your dog! We are very proud to be a pet-friendly hotel and happy that you took advantage of this accommodation on your Charleston vacation. Thank you for trying Blu while you were here and for contributing a glowing review as well. Folly Beach is a very pet friendly island with most restaurants accepting our four-legged family members. The author of this review is correct about beach restrictions in season. From May until September, dogs are allowed on the beach before 10am and after 6pm. Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions regarding your pets prior to arrival.

From the first phone call to make my reservation talking to Maggie - to the last goodbye out the door from Amanda there was nothing but kindness and understanding. After a 2and 1/2 hour plane delay and getting to SC -the staff were so accommodating and gave me the best room!!!! They also gave directions to a beautiful site for an awesome run (the lighthouse on Marsh Island) and the best burger and entertainment at Rita's. I will get to this great place again!!!

My wife and I recently stayed at the Tides to visit South Carolina and celebrate a birthday. Our experience with the friendly and helpful staff along with the hotel itself made this one of the best vacations we’ve ever had. I can’t say enough good things about our trip and I have already begun recommending the Tides to my friends and co-workers. Folly beach is very laid back and fun with a ton of stuff to do. This is the best hotel on the beach in center of everything. It's an older structure but the rooms are updated (nice and modern). The lobby areas, restaurant and patio on the beach are very cool. We’ll will be back as soon as possible.

Room Tip: All rooms have a balcony viewing the beach. This is the best hotel on the beach.

This resort has the usual structural drawbacks of a seaside resort-badly kept elevators and passages-mainly because of the sand and moisture that is carried in.
However, lets glow over the positives-excellent sea facing location and friendly staff.
There is plenty of parking space and checkin is fast.
The rooms are a trifle small but are well provided. There is cable tv with usual channels, small fridge and coffee maker. Each room opens into a balcony facing the beach and sea with a beautiful view if the fishing pier which is very close by.
Attached Blu restaurant is adequate with good wine and beer spread.Breakfast is virtually nonexistent.

My boyfriend and I just returned from two nights at The Tides Folly Beach and we were extremely disappointed with the cleanliness at the hotel. We felt cheated by the $300 plus price tag per night ($150 would have been more in line - the dirt and grime in our room was unacceptable) and we also believe that the positive reviews that have been posted below may be fake to help increase business for the hotel.

The staff are wonderful and friendly--our check in process was smooth and easy. Once we walked into the room we did a once over and noticed the room was much more run down than it appeared in photos posted on TA. Ex: the doorway frame was moldy with chipping paint, the bathroom had spider webs under the sink area, there was dirt and sand on the floor of the bedroom. It was late and we were tired so we decided not to complain/switch rooms. I wish we had. When we pulled back the sheets we noticed their was dirt and stains on the bed--we even noticed glitter from eye make up on the pillows. See attached photo...it was disgusting. We called down to the front desk and they immediately sent someone up. While the employee was sweet and helpful in changing the sheets, she also relayed the hotel was understaffed and that even the management had been working as house keeping that day to get the hotel in order for guests coming in from several different wedding parties. It was very clear our room had been barely cleaned - for $327 a night this is totally unacceptable.

The next day we let the staff at the front desk know and asked that our room be swept and cleaned properly. The girls were very apologetic and promised it would be a focus. Upon our return that evening the first thing we noticed was the floor was still dirty from the prior guest's stay: hair, dusk, dirt/sand....it was extremely frustrating. We wore our flip flops inside the room and never completely felt relaxed during our stay.

When we checked out the manager gave us $50 off per night which we appreciated yet we still left the property feeling cheated that we spent $620 for two nights in a sub-par dirty room.

We could have stayed at La Quinta outside Charleston for $100 something a night and been much happier with our hotel visit.

Room Tip: Rooms are accessed via an outdoor hallway - similar to a motel.

We enjoyed the location of this hotel, but felt like it was way overpriced for the condition that it is in. It was $300 including tax, and we have stayed at $300 hotels before and they are always in top notch condition and have superb service. The service wasn't great at all...we had to ask three times for a coffee maker to be brought to our room before it was finally brought up. The view was great however, and the pool and bar area were nice. The food was really good too, and they have a Starbucks cafe on-site, as well as free Starbucks coffee in the room. I just think that the reason this hotel is so expensive is because it's the only hotel on Folly, so they can raise their prices to whatever they want. I would stay there again if it were $100 cheaper. We would have liked to have slept with the door open to hear the ocean, but music was blasting at the bar until pretty late, so if you want a low-key relaxing resort, I would probably go to Isle of Palms.
