“Wonderful views of dawn over the Atlantic Ocean”
Reviewed December 4, 2012

This property has the best view of sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean on Folly Beach, South Carolina. The sunset was also enchanting. Value and service were great especially during off-season. The dining service was excellent - dinner was Shrimp and Grits a house specialty and truly exceptional. The rooms were small but adequate. The outstanding Atlantic ocean views at dawn added an extra benefit to the stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a high room near the pier to get the best view of the sunrise.

We just returned from a weekend at the Tides, which also doubled as the first vacation for our dog. Pet friendly hotels can be a challenge to find. Luckily, the Tides welcomes four legged friends on a regular basis.

The hotel charges a one time fee of $85 for your pet, which is still cheaper than booking your dog/cat for a weekend at the vet hotel. Plus, you can take your pooch just about anywhere (restaurants are a no-go).

The lobby has been updated and we were greeted by a friendly staff of 20-somethings who genuinely seemed interested in having us as guests. Our room was clean, although nothing worthy of a Ritz-Carlton. Then again, not many pet friendly hotels on the beach would be anyways. We had a king bed with a pullout sleeper sofa. When we called for linens for the pullout sofa, they were delivered to the room within five minutes. The bathroom was equipped with soaps, shampoo and conditioner and a hair dryer. As for the view, it was incredible! We opened our curtains and looked straight out over the beach and water. The long extending pier was off to the left and an outdoor pool with nearby restaurant and bar was below us. The sunrises were beautiful.

As for the area, Folly Beach is a small hamlet of homes, condos, restaurants and shops. Within 50 yards of the hotel is the downtown corridor, consisting of your typical watering holes, seafood eateries and souvenir shops. In the evening, the area came to life, but not out of control. In fact, we enjoyed the area's social tone in that people had fun, but weren't obnoxious. And considering we were there on the South Carolina-Clemson football weekend, this surprised us.

As for getting into Charleston, it's a quick 15 minute ride by car to get to downtown and the historical district. Very easy.

The Tides is an excellent choice, and really about the only hotel choice, on Folly Beach. The staff is friendly and they seemed excited to have us as guests. The rooms are average and typical of a hotel on the beach. All things considered, I'd stay with them again without hesitation.

Room Tip: Walk a block into downtown and have breakfast at the Black Magic Cafe. It's a small cottage styl...

My wife and I stayed here in October to visit family in the area. The beach views are fantastic. The staff is obviously recruited for and further trained to be people who are friendly, courteous, and helpful. Beth at the front desk stands out as the type of employee/representative every business wishes they could have. The rooms were clean and well equipped and maintained that way by the housekeeping dept. The beach, pier, pool, super restaurant, and laid back town of Folly Beach make this a great get away. Add beautiful downtown Charleston only 10-15 minutes away and you have the perfect vacation.

Room Tip: High up is better for beach views.

We spent a long weekend recently at Folly Beach and were very pleased with our accomodations at Tides. The location is perfect if you want to be in the center of town. You will hear noise from the nearby restaurant and the hotel deck but we enjoyed the music coming from both. The TV reception was fuzzy on some stations but we didn't take a vacation to watch TV. The room was not fancy but was nicely decorated, clean, and well kept. The hotel's restaurant was 4 star and the weather was nice enough to sit out on the deck at night at a table with a small fire pit. The pool and restaurant deck were very accomodating and comfortable - a relaxing place to be. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful.
I would recommend Tides to anyone needing a weekend getaway.

I am a DJ and had a wedding to do on the beach in Folly. Decided to stay here two nights and it was definitely the right choice. The Tides is immediately at the end of Hwy 171 and right on the beach next to the Folly pier. We had room 840. The front desk (Kelly) was attentive and helpful. The room was as requested: high up, away from vending and quiet. It had a good view. It could use upgrading, but the price was right and it was clean. We found this to be perfectly adequate and very convenient for the wedding on Arctic Ave. Would stay here again. The heated pool and good beach access are a nice touch. Only wish there was an inexpensive breakfast nearby.

Room Tip: Ask for a high room not over the restaurant.

Nicely appointed hotel right on the beach...comfortable beds though air conditioning units were loud and rooms were not as immaculate as they might have been....cleaners seemed to come late morning/early afternoon and sometimes just on request...
Staff are super friendly and pool is nice especially for kids. Expect this hotel is considerably better value than inner city Charleston hotels - not quite the charm but the beach is beautiful.
Best part of this hotel is its location!

Room Tip: Higher level rooms are more removed from restaurant/bar noise with great views

Spent one night here end of October. Very easy to find. It's at the end of road you drive in on.We were given a choice of rooms and took the ninth floor. As expected, great views. Folly Beach pier is right next door. No problems with the room, nice but don't expect high end. If the wife's ok with it, then I'm ok, and she didn't find faults. There are 3 blocks of shops, bars and restaurants within a 1/2 block walk. Also hotel has a restaurant.Didn't make it to the beach or pool,(post Sandy weather,50 and a northern 20mph wind) but the next morning there was a guy raking the beach and another cleaning the pool. The locals in the surf shop can direct you to where to eat.

For your compliments of our staff, I thank you and we are all happy you had a great time on Folly even if you didn’t quite make it down to the beach. Hopefully the weather will cooperate a bit better on your next visit to Folly Beach and we look forward to seeing you both again then!
