“A PERFECT Get-Away....”
Reviewed April 27, 2012

From the minute we pulled into Tides, we knew we were in for a treat. Hearing the waves rolling as we were parking our cars, we realized we were immediately a miillion miles away from the daily grind without the effort of travelling to the ends of the earth to get there. Maybe just the Edge of the World (as the locals like to call Folly Beach).

The hotel had recently been rennovated. Staff was amazing - everyone made a point to make eye contact, smile and be super-accommodating. Views from the room (all have ocean views) were beautiful and I could get used to waking up front-beach with the sun rising over the water real easily!

Bed was super comfortable and linens were great. Plenty of little extras made our stay more fun - Starbucks on site, great room service opptions, heated pool, firepit on the patio for when the sun went down and temperature dropped, great service from ALL staff, good shampoos/conditioner, nice wine selection, supepr restaurant on site, Fun Folly laid-backness of the beach town, etc...

The onsite restaurant, BLU, offered an impressive treat of seafood and specialty dishes. Much of it local and ALL of it exquistely prepared and presented. Our waiter recommended superb pairings of dishes and wines and all in all it was a perfect meal!

Can't say enough good about Tides, Blu and the fun of Folly!

Rooms were clean. Ocean front is indeed ocean front. Service was average. Wouldn't stay again for the price I expected more.

This years spring break, we decided to go to the Tides and my family and are so happy with our choice that we will be returning next year. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The pool area was very nice, the chairs were very comfortable especially the ones in the shade that looked like eggs. The only recommendation is to get their early to stake out your spot with your towel.

The location is PERFECT and within a walking distance to some great restaurants. Parking was fair, the hotel was full during our stay but I always found a spot.

The rooms were spacious and clean. The decor is very pleasing. When we didn't find extra blankets we just called and in a timely manner we received what we needed. If you like your room cleaned everyday, I was told by the cleaning staff to make arrangements with the front desk, otherwise they do clean the bathroom and bring fresh towels. Overall, it was a relaxing vacation, the beds were comfortable and the ac was outstanding, the view was inviting.

And for the animal lovers, I can't say how much my dogs enjoyed their first road trip. We have 2 small dogs and we traveled with their crates and no problems. Their pet fees are the best I've seen a flat $85 for both pets. You can't go wrong. There were so many pets while we were there that my daughter suggested they have a dog camp. That would be funny.

The only things they need to improve is their WIFI, it was very slow. They said they're working on it. In all, the visit was fun, we will be returning.

Room Tip: All the rooms face the ocean. You can't go wrong.

Thank you so much for choosing to stay with us during your Spring Break vacation! It was a pleasure having your family and your dogs stay with us. Thank you, also, for posting such a fantastic review here on Tripadvisor. Our parking attendants work hard to ensure all our guests have a place to park while they are staying with us so thank you for recognizing their efforts. When I passed along your compliments, they were very appreciative. Please tell you daughter that we all thought the idea of a dog camp was very funny! We are working on improving our wireless internet. With the improvements we are making, this should be a non-issue by mid May. We promise to keep all present and future guests posted with our progress.

Thank you again for choosing Tides as your home away from home and we look forward to seeing you next year during Spring Break!

We chose Tides for the great location on Folly Beach and because we could bring Boo Boo, our chihuahua, apparently, it's THE place to go if you own a dog. There were dogs everywhere and dog pee in the hall both on our floor and in the lobby. I personally watched a dog raise his leg and pee on one of the chairs in the lobby. The location is wonderful but if I had a toddler I don't think I would want them on the floors of the rooms or common areas of this hotel. On a better note, the pool was nice, the outside bar friendly and fun and the staff extremely courteous and helpful.

Room Tip: Beautiful balcony rooms

It was great having the opportunity to serve you and Boo Boo on your recent visit to Folly Beach! We thoroughly enjoyed your company as well as the company of all our four-legged guests. Our guests that bring dogs are very courteous and pick up after their animals. In the event they do not, we have a very attentive staff that cleans and sanitizes after an accident. We sincerely apologize that the author of this review witnessed such an accident but everyone can rest assured that it was cleaned thoroughly! Thank you for your compliments of our pool and our staff. I have passed along your kind words and we are all looking forward to the next time you come and visit!

The only thing this hotel has in its favor is the location and close proximity to the beach. The rooms are adequate size, but the beds are very hard, the pillows are too thick, they don't put blankets on the beds...we just had sheets and a bedspread. The balconies are very small and no chairs nor spacious enough to fit them. The sliding glass door to the balcony would have been wonderful if it had a screen, otherwise I couldn't leave it open to hear the waves while sleeping because I didn't want any wildlife intruders. Any type of pet is allowed in every room so if you have allergies like me you will be living on allergy meds. We arrived the day before Easter, had a long trip, and planned on getting to bed early in order to attend Mass the next day. However, the live band that the hotel claimed they had no control over kept us up well past midnight. The pool is very small and the water looked dirty. The elevators are beyond slow and one is usually out of service. So, one day we decided to find the staircase. We found it and chose to never take it again since it had a strong urine smell and debris was everywhere. The town of Folly Beach seemed like a party town with drunk people yelling and being obnoxious all over the place. Take my advice people...go to Cape May NJ instead!!!!!

Room Tip: Go somewhere else...don't waste your time here!!!!

Thank you for taking the time to write this review here on Tripadvisor. We regret that the experience had by the author of this review was anything less than stellar but I want to assure all readers that we do work exceptionally hard to make sure everyone’s vacation time is well spent on Folly Beach.

I would like to address a few of the concerns mentioned by the author of this review. We receive far many more compliments about our beds than complaints but we do apologize that their sleep comfort was subpar for their vacation. Our balconies are small and do not fit furniture. This is in our advertising and is clear from the room descriptions on our website therefore should not have been a surprise upon arrival. They are big enough to fit four people shoulder-to-shoulder and, of course, all balconies overlook the ocean! Folly Beach has a very vibrant nightlife scene that is not necessarily restricted to the evening hours. All Folly Beachgoers should be aware of this fact. Anyone wishing to have more of a serene beach experience should look into some of the fantastic beach rentals throughout Folly Beach.

While the Folly Beach lifestyle and experience may not be for everyone, we are very proud of our product and the staff on hand that accommodates all our guests so we encourage everyone to come down here and check out the Edge of America for themselves! I encourage the author of this review to contact us directly with any other concerns or questions and hopefully we have the opportunity to serve them again on a future visit.

The room had a great view and was very spacious for a family of three. The staff were very friendly. The hotel wasn't very secure, non-guest used the parking, which made parking for guest probellmatic at times. The beach was clean and well maintained. Great for a moonlit stroll, i could see all the constellations. 20 min drive from Charleston. Take the Gullah Tour and dine at the Fat Hen. Go on a kayak tour Flippers our guide Andy was very knowledgeable.

The hotel room was too expensive based on the quality of the room. The room charge was $183 dollars a night for a Sun-Thurs. stay and it would have been more for a Fri-Sun. stay. I can only assume the unreasonable room rate was based on the great ocean view and based on the fact that was this was the only hotel on the beach. I was very annoyed to learn that breakfast was not included and it was an additional $10 dollar charge to have a microwave in the room. The only breakfast option on the hotel grounds of the hotel was a breakfast buffet for $11.95 per adult.

The beds and pillows were very lumpy and uncomfortable. The air conditioner was too loud to hear for the TV without turning it up and really too loud for someone who was a light sleeper. Also, during the night, my wife experienced what appeared to be insect bites on her arms, chest and feet. Not sure what caused, but dogs are allowed at this hotel and who knows it could have been fleas. The balconies are not full-sized balconies, only big enough to stand on them, but not big enough to sit in a comfortable chair. Also, all balconies are ocean-front rooms as they say, but some rooms have obstructed views to the left of the beach because of the side hotel wall that extends out. I know this because at first I was put in one of these rooms, but then moved to a room without the wall after complaining.

The service was good at the front desk. My only negative experience with the service was when one of the maids who seemed annoyed when asked for additional towels and when the same maid did not clean our room after agreeing she let us shower/clean up before doing so.

The pool, lobby and outside Tiki bar was very nice, but the pool deck did not include a hot tub and the pool did not feel heated as advertised on their website and brochure.

Overall, the room rate was really too high for the quality of the room and based on the overall experience. If the hotel had included breakfast and the microwave in the price the stay would have been more tolerable and enjoyable.

At Tides, it is our goal to provide a product, service and value that far exceeds the monetary significance paid by our guests, regardless of what that may be. We regret, in this case, that we failed to live up to that standard and hope to regain the trust and business of this reviewer in the future. For the difficulties the author of this review experienced with sleep comfort, we sincerely apologize. Our beds are only a year old and the vast majority of the comments we receive are extremely complimentary. We apologize for any misrepresentation that our pool deck included a hot tub. We’ve never offered a Jacuzzi but the pool is heated to 90 degrees all year long. I encourage the author of this review to contact us directly so we may work together to make your next stay one of fond memories.
