I wanted the share my experience with Econolodge in Florence, SC, because if I had an employee behaving this way I would fire them.... I do have a choice card, I don't use it too much because I am a Marriott gold member (actually two nights short of platinum last year) ... I travel a LOT. I was driving to Florida for spring break (because I am missing business travel and a couple appts on the way back) and didn't make reservations in advance. all the marriotts were full... since I do have a choice card and econolodge was advertising 40.00, we were trying to call ahead to the florence econolodge to get a room. the lady first didn't answer the phone and when she did said "travel inn"... no idea if this was a problem with the gps phone number or not, but when she did she said "travelinn"... then I tried information for econolodge in florence, NC ... no listing. My daughter tried calling as well, same issue lady was impossible to understand and hung up on her (my daughter is 18). finally we decided just to stop by since there were a lot of hotels off that exit and had been advised by marriott to try that exit. I am an overweight white female in my late 40's. I stood outside the door while the also female employee (an extremely overweight black female with greying hair) talked on the phone with a guest... sounded like she was arguing with him.. she did not buzz me in while I stood at the glass door or in anyway even acknowledge I was there.. finally, in frustration after about 7-8 minutes of such treatment I hit the buzzer. She yells at me “I am on the phone with a guest”; I ask “could you just tell me if you have any rooms”; she yells back, more irritated “I will talk to you when I am finished with this guest”. It was 5 am in the morning; I had been driving all night. All I wanted was a 10 second reply, yes we have rooms or no we don’t. We left and went to the Sleep Inn down the room, who answered their phones nicely, answered their door, and were quite pleasant.
Unbelievable. I tried to send this story to Econolodge, but it wouldn’t fit on their website. And this, folks, is why I stay at Marriotts almost exclusively…. Where regardless of the location or the time, they are always nice…
