Upon entering Botany Bay, we were greeted by a volunteer and given a map of the area. It also contained various points of interest which could be found along the looped drive. Our first stop was the beach. The waves were pretty rough the day we went. There were lots of shells on the beach. You are not allowed to take any shells or anything else out of this area. Doing so will result in a fine of $470.00. The road is all dirt/gravel but was in very good condition. Botany Bay is only a few minutes from Edisto Beach and well worth the time.

Take the self-guided tour through the property and then make sure to hit the beach. It's just a short walk to the beach and it is absolutely beautiful!!!

We recently visited Botany Bay and I would highly recommend it. You do have to take a 1/2 mile walk back to the beach so if you are able to do that (or bike it) it is well worth it. You see the beach the way people would have seen it years ago--it is beautiful. The walk to the beach is interesting also (through the tidal marshes). This was one of our favorite places on the island.

Visited this SC Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Management Area on August 27 specifically looking for birds, but it is a very nice place for people to visit to view the wildlife in general or just relax in a natural, undisturbed setting. The driving map, which can be picked up at the entrance, describes the historial sites that you will see during the drive. You can walk a half-mile to an unspoiled, natural beach. There are not any restrooms in this area and dogs are not allowed on the beach. The WMA is closed on Tuesdays and at other times for "special hunts", so check before you visit.

The beach at Botany Bay is incredible. You drive down a dirt ( fairly large ruts!) road under a canopy of oaks and cypress and Spnish Moss. You drive by fields of sunflowers and corn planted for the birds and the deer. You park under some trees and walk a half mile on a dirt/partly paved berm through/ over the salt marsh and you reach a stunningly pristine, wild and absolutely gorgeous beach. There is a huge abundance of oyster, clam, conch, and other shells. There are dead trees in the surf and amazing driftwood one the shore. Peope have decorated the branches like wild Christmas trees with all types of shells. There are well marked turtle nesting areas. The surf is moderate though the currents and tides can be quite dangerous and there are no lifeguards available. It is a marvelous spot to sit and watch or photograph. This one of the most hauntingly beautiful beaches in the world. Do not miss it!
