Conway's Main Street Theatre is the home of the Theatre of the Republic theatre company.
("Republic" as in Independent Republic of Horry County, S.C.).
The company was founded in 1969, and moved into their present home in 1999.
The Theatre put on a season of 4 - 6 plays each year, augmented by other entertainment events, and classic movies.
The company is a non-profit, staffed, run, and starring local residents, all volunteers. This is amateur theatre in the true sense of the term - people who do not get paid and have day jobs - but they strive for quality presentations, and receive enthusiastic support from the community. Productions involve locals of all ages - whole families participate.
I saw "Ain't Misbehavin' ", which is a musical revue of Fats Wallers songs. Singing was a bit inconsistant but everyone worked really hard, and the audience had a good time.
Tickets may be purchased on line, by phone, or at the box office. Prices are modest (about $18 per play in 2012).
Parking is readily available on the streets around the theatre.
Several restaurants are in downtown Conway, close to the theatre.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the theatre and were impressed by the quality of the musicianship and acting. The story was entertaining and fun. We wished more clothes were kept on at one point, especially since children were in the audience, but mostly the play was clean and well done. The theatre was comfortable, homey and had a wonderful ambiance. Acoustics were great and we left feeling like we'd had an excellent time for a very reasonable price. It was a bonus to be in the same building as our inn as well!

Theatre of the Republic produces some of the best community theater around. Many patrons who visit the Grand Strand from all over the country, compare the musicals produced at this little gym to the best of Broadway. The Executive Director is a visionary, and the rest of the staff are true professionals. The theater operates through donations and the help of dozens of committed volunteers. We saw "Hairspray" and I don't think the performance could have been any better on Broadway. The theater is able to tap into the local university's talent pool, as well as capitalizing on the many talented baby boomers who have resettled at the beach. If you are in town, you have to go!
