“A ‘hearty’ getaway!”
Reviewed February 18, 2009

The Embassy Suites Hotel Columbia - Greystone was my only choice for a Valentine’s weekend escape. I find some of the previous reviews a bit harsh, and perhaps they were true, but apparently someone listened! The staff at check-in was extremely courteous. When entering my two-room suite, I was extremely pleased -- it was absolutely immaculate. Later that evening was the manager’s reception which was a pure delight. And, of course, the following morning was the complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast -- in one word, yummy!

We stayed at the Embassy Suites for an overnight stopover after a long day's drive. We stayed in a corner room on an upper floor. With 3 children we typically seek out Embassy Suites for the extra room. The room was clean and well kept, although the bathroom was outdated. The night we were there, the hotel was hosting both a company Christmas party and a wedding reception. There was a large group of kids staying three rooms down, seemingly part of one of those two parties. Finally, there was a bachelorette party at the end of the hallway. Needless to say, this had us quite concerned and had us almost requesting a new room before we got into it. However, we heard very little outside noise from our room and slept well.

We used the room service that evening, which arrived promptly and was good. Breakfast was pretty standard for Embassy Suites.

All in all, we had a nice stay and would go back.

The visual appearance of this hotel did not excite us as it looked like a tired 1970s hotel. The front desk staff was very welcoming and the lobby Christmas tree picked up our spirits. Our suite had new carpet and decent furnishings but there was a very strange buzzing sound coming from the window. I carefully inspected it as it sounded like a swarm of bees might be lurking in the curtain, however, it turned out the window was slightly opened which allowed the strong winter winds to create the buzzing sound. The view from the window was of a bunch of dumpsters and tossed out materials used for a renovation and at night the windows did not do a good job of keeping out the cold draft...likely evidence of 1970s era windows that were not well insulated. Breakfast was standard Embassy Suites fare and we managed to get a good night's sleep. Fortunately the business center had two functioning computers though I can't understand why expensive hotels like this insist on nickle and diming people for in-room Interet access. Overall the pros balanced out the cons but we will look elsewhere on our next visit to Columbia unless we hear of a major makeover for this hotel.

I spent one night here while in Columbia on business. Very good dinner in restaurant with exceptional service from maitre d' and waitress. Breakfast to order better than that in most Embassy Suites I've been in (about two dozen). Manager's reception OK for drinks, limited in snacks (unless you're really crazy about chips and salsa). Large comfortable lobby with good business center with free internet.

The general location is a pretty sterile commercial area with office buildings and not much else. Some other properties in Columbia are closer to museums etc.

Here are my issues with this hotel on this stay:

- room was hot, not unbearable, but I like it cold. (I had requested a corner room. The corner rooms don't have adjoining rooms and I hate those doors from the other room.) According to the maintenance guy they sent up (very rapidly), the AC was putting out cold air, the problem was the corner room which had windows all the way around. The curtains were closed, so this should have helped, but didn't. I got the impression they would move me, but I was happy with the location (quiet and away from elevators).

- there were two family reunions going on at the hotel. Tons of kids, everywhere. They were in and out of the pool, water all over the lobby, adults just ignoring it all. Kids in the workout room, even though a big sign saying no one under 18.

- the complementary breakfast. The omelets were good. Didn't get anything from the buffet bar (all of the kids from the family reunions were all over it, not for me). It was like they weren't used to this many people, the juice machines and creamer, etc. were out and not getting refilled nearly enough.

As a plus, they have a manager's reception from 5-7 with free cocktails, beer, and wine.

  • Liked — it was convenient to an event I was going to, package deal
  • Disliked — room was hot/the family reunions

I stayed at this hotel July 4 weekend. I was in town for a family reunion. I have stayed at this hotel many times in the past over the last five years, but this was the first time that the service was poor.
Overall, I just didn't have a nice warm welcome. At a point, it made one feel that you just wanted to walk out and go to another hotel.

Below are a few examples of poor service:

At check-in on July 5, the front-desk staffer was very unfriendly and was cool. When I asked simple questions, his answers were very short and very cold.

There wasn't anyone to help get luggage to the room. There also weren't any luggage pull carts for hotel guests either.

On July 7, a relative inquired about booking the hotel for a birthday party. The staffer at the front desk wasn't helpful, nor did she refer us to someone in the sales department.

Below are a few examples of good service:

On July 8 at check out, two ladies at the reception desk were very helpful and friendly. They also put us in contact with a sales representative, who was also friendly and helpful.

In the hotel restaurant, the man who prepared the omlettes was very professional during our entire stay. Even though the restaruant closed at 9 p.m., he was still kind enough to serve folks after the restaurant had closed (just by five or 10 minutes) - with a fwarm, riendly smile. I was travelling with someone who is a diabetic; so sometimes he has to eat at odd times.

The chef's supervisor was also professional.

The housekeeping staff did not speak English, but they tried to understand me when I made a request.

The rooms and the bathrooms were clean.

I had a good night's rest.

This was a great hotel with all of the usual Embassy Suites ammenities. The pool was great for the kids...only issue was lack of towels a couple of times. There was some 40's style party that was going on while we were there that for some reason seemed awkward because it took up the entire lobby and we had to cut through in our bathing suits to get to the desk to ask for towels! The only other issues were that the front desk staff were really nice while the rest of the hotel staff seemed to be in a bit of a bad mood. When we checked in our room was not available so SURPRISE...we got a free $50.00 gift certificate to spend in the restaurant...that was nice...and it was only about 30 minutes until the room was ready! The best thing about this hotel....the location. It is very close to the nicest zoo I have ever been to. Also easy to map on the internet too...great hotel for a great price.
