“Can't go wrong here!”

I love Blue Marlin - truly one of my favorite places to eat in Downtown Columbia. The atmosphere is great with its dark wood ceilings and booths. The bar area is quite ecelectic looking. It has the feeling of an upscale 1920's restaurant, like you expect to see fine gentlemen in the corner smoking cigars.

The staff wear white button up shirts and neckties with black pants - classy.

The food is always so good. Their grits are amazing - stone ground. Try the shrimp and grits - a SC favorite. You also receive complementary collards, which are so good, you don't even need seasoning. The bread is made there in a small loaf and so good - and I'm not even a bread person. They make an EXCELLENT martini!

All in all, good food, great atmosphere - I'm never dissappointed at the Blue Marlin.

“Great food and a classic atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2006

My wife, daughter and mother inlaw were in Columbia for my sons graduation from Ft Jackson. We walked to the Blue Marlin from the Hampton Inn as it was close. The interior was warm and inviting. It was a converted train station with the original trayed ceilings with rich oaks and mahogany wood and nice lighting.

I had a steak with blue cheese and loved it. The salad was covbered in bacon and tomatoes. The calamari was great as well.

We liked the food so much we returned the night night.

“Good, but inconsistent”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2006

We've been to the Blue Marlin 3 times - twice for dinner, once for brunch.

The first dinner experience was great - my husband and I both had great seafood dinners. It was a Saturday night and we had to wait a little bit for a table but we had friendly service at the bar while we waited.

The second time we went to dinner was only okay - the service was a bit spotty and they were out of everything! We had to go down to our 2nd/3rd choices on the menu before we found something they had.

Brunch was awful! Horrible food and horrible service, even though the place was only half-full.

Columbia doesn't have a ton of great restaurants. Blue Marlin, at least for dinner, is probably one of the better ones. It also has a great location in the Vista, if you want to go somewhere else for a drink before or after. But our advice would be to stick to dinner and don't wait too late to get there.
