“Impressionists Monet/Matisse”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

The show had some excellent pieces John Singer Sargent, Pissaro, Monet, Boudin, Matisse and many others. Great presentation of impressionist periods and artists influenced by that period.

“Lovely museum”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

I saw a great Impressionist exhibit and loved some of the permanent exhibits. Costumes made out of recycled materials were so interesting. It was a great way to spend an afternoon.

“The special exhibits are what's worth coming for”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

I've come to several special exhibits here that are worth it. The regular collection is OK, but a bit small compared to the big city museums.

“Visiting Columbia, SC? Visit the Museum of Art.”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

"Impressionism from Monet to Matisse" is at the Columbia Museum of Art until April 21, 2013. And while, Columbia, SC, is probably off the beaten track except for business travelers, anyone visiting the city with a few free hours, could thoroughly and enjoyably immerse themselves in exploring the 55 works on view. While there are no major pieces, there are what one curator called "hidden gems." The works on exhibit are from the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, TN and until very recently never left the city.
What impressed me most was seeing the evolution of individual painters from that period. And even though the rainy Saturday afternoon brought in more visitors than usual, there was plenty of space and time to stand and sit to admire a painting. IPod headphones featuring commentators reflections and points of view, are free as is the tour given my an enthusiastic retired professors, with his refreshing and interesting insights into the culture and artistic moods of that era.
If time permits, "Anxious Visions: The Art of Michael Northuis" the drawings and painting of this southern artists are fascinating for their psychological imagery of everyday life. Stimulating and fascinating talent for shifting the viewer into an observer of Northuis' offbeat world.
