“Nice to Just Walk the Grounds”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

When visiting Columbia, I love walking on the grounds of the Capital. They are well kept with the capital building in the center. There are numerous statues and graden areas. It is a very peaceful spot.

“Beautiful building with lots of history”
Reviewed October 18, 2013

We did not have time to take the guided tour, so we watched the informative 15 minute movie detailing the building's history. Afterwards, we did a self guided tour of the second floor, where there is the senate chamber and house chamber. Be sure to see the sword and the mace.
Look up at the inside glass dome and all the art work. On the outside of the building, there are 6 stars commemorating where Sherman's Union army sent cannonballs through the walls, while building was under construction. There are numerous statues and a new African American bronze sculpture wall. There is also a gift shop on the premises.
HINT: if doing a self guided tour, allow about 1 hour minimum. There is ample metered parking on the street. Be prepared to go through security.

“Excellent historical site”
Reviewed October 2, 2013

This was our 22nd state capitol building visited. The grounds are well manicured, with several interesting monuments scattered about. Took a guided tour of the interior, which begins with a 15 minute movie about the history of the capitol. Our guide was very knowledgeable and with only 4 people on the tour we were able to ask as many questions as we wanted to. Surprised that the building was so small but some interesting architecture. Have to say this is the first capitol we've visited with cannonball damage!

“Even more impressive interior”
Reviewed October 2, 2013 via mobile

Highly impressed after being a little skeptical before-hand.

Interior architecture, art work, cultural displays, furnishings were all outstanding. Worth the more than 50 years it took to complete the building.

About 250 years of South Carolina history seemed well-presented.

Taylor was the excellent guide for our group.
