Fancy building, interesting architecture, wear shorts because of all the hot air inside the building.

“Centerpiece of Columbia”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2012

Columbia is quite a charming and underrated Southern city, with a river, some old neighborhoods, and a major university. The heart of it all though is this beautiful old State Capitol building. The Capitol is imposing, impressive and leaves you awestruck. the grounds are well kept, and if you park here you can walk to the University of South Carolina campus very easily. South Carolina may not be the most important state in the nation, but you wouldn't know it from here.

“A survivor of Sherman's March”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2012

A gun from the Battleship Maine graces the northeast grounds on the Statehouse as well as a statue of George Washington with his broked saber, a mark left by a Union soldier in 1865. Marks of cannonballs fired by part of Sherman's forces are identified by bronze stars on the west walls of the granite structure. The original building and most of the city was burned as the Union moved through and to the northeast, but construction was restarted and completed some years later. Interior walls with the dome are evidence of planning and skilled craftsmen. A springtime delight for anyone with a camera, a picture of color and history, many monuments to the statesmen who hailed from The Palmetto State.

“A Remarkable Seat of Government”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2012

Persons interested in history and government will find a visit to the South Carolina State House in Columbia a rewarding experience. While tours are provided on a regular schedule, we elected to tour the building on our own. During our time there, we were approached by a number of staff members who were exceptionally friendly and who engaged us in conversation. The State House is a magnificent structure that is kept in immaculate condition. The grounds surrounding the State House were full of lush flowering plants, large trees, and monuments. We thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent in and around the State House.
