Owner description: The South Carolina State Museum is a state-of-the-art facility featuring four floors of permanent and changing exhibits, a digital dome planetarium, 4D interactive theater and an observatory. The State Museum, the largest and most comprehensive museum in the state, is located along the banks of the Congaree River in downtown Columbia, South Carolina.

The South Carolina State Museum is a very big museum, varying from natural history to modern state history. There is an enourmous amount of different exhibits, but somehow it feels a bit too much. I usually find it easier to learn something if the exhibits are more focused. Staff were a bit nonchalant, but generally friendly!

Tip: Focus on a small part of the museum per visit and visit several times.

We went as a school field trip.
Is was educational for the kids as well as the adults..
We arrived later in the day so we were not able to see all the exhibits.
We plan on visiting again when we have more time.

We ahve gone back again and again. It's agreat family trip fro a moderate price. There is absolutely so much to see and most exhibts are interactive to keep your little one attention span. Just a huge facility so crowds have yet to be a problem. You will go more than once plus it's a great excuse to go sample some of the great food that's just a few blocks north in downtown Columbia. A definite must do!

Does a great job with the history and environment of South Carolina and feature interesting visiting exhibits that cover everything from Napoleon to Body World.

Museum is open during expansion, entrance is on the side.
