“Great stay and staff, older property”
Reviewed June 30, 2012

This is a standard full service marriott that is a bit dated. The staff was excellent and very accomodating. It's a great location if you plan on staying around the downtown area. Walking distance to some really good restaurants and bars, as well as the state capital. The rooms have an older feel, but are spacious and clean. Breakfast buffet is excellent. The value for what you get is worth a stay at this property

This is a standard well located Marriott that looks to be between 20-30 years old. In general the public areas are well updated. The hotel shares a parking garage with an office building, and that is a different story altogether. This garage is old, not well updated or maintained, and in many areas just plain filthy. No one has cleaned the elevator in some time. The circular entry door between the garage and the hotel was disassembled. Parking was free and in this case you got what you paid for. To get from my car to my room I had to use three different elevators.
I used a Priceline reservation and was checked in without fuss and given the password for free internet. The room was spotless, the television was a large flat screen with a great picture and a good selection of channels. Bathroom amenities were nice, the bathroom was a bit small but pretty normal for a building of this age. The mattress was great, they sell a set through a catalogue you can peruse in the room.
Staff interaction was minimal but what there was was very friendly and helpful. No complaints.
The breakfast buffet was in my opinion not up to snuff. The eggs and hash browns were not very good. Some of the sliced bread would not fit in the toaster. There was an omelet station that I did not use and I'm sure a custom omelet would have raised my opinion.
All in all I certainly got my money's worth; however, had I been paying rack rates my perception would be much different.

I've always stayed at the Sheraton when in town but this time we were at the Mariott instead. The lobby is pretty but the rest of it is in pretty bad need of a remodel. The carpet on the stairs down from the second level is balding and everything looks a little dated and run down. Co-worker had to switch rooms because hot water didn't work. My room was right next to the ice/vending machine and they were super loud. If I didn't have the tv on I could hear the buzz in my room. Once again, reserved a king bed and got two doubles but since I was travelling alone this time, I didn't really care. The place is saved however by the great staff and free wi-fi was a very nice touch. Also, even though the room looked old, it also seemed to be very clean. The location is good, you are walking distance from lots of good food and coffee. Parking is a little pricey but consistent with other places in the area.

Small rooms -old - needs a remodel. No hot water without asking for a repair. WiFi stopped working. Good breakfast in concierge lounge. Left self park garage before 8:00 am, didnt have to pay for parking. Very comfortable Marriott beds and pillows. Quiet place for a sound night sleep.

This is a hard property to rate. After all, there is plenty to like about this Marriott: The staff is extremely helpful, the hotel is located within walking distance of the Capitol Building, and I wasn't charged for internet - despite the usual cost of $10. I even got a great deal on the room!

However, despite all of this, there is one flaw: This Marriott is tired and worn. The rooms, while clean, are in need of an update. The hallways need new carpeting, the walls need new paint, and the public facilities are right out of the mid-90s.

So, while spending a couple nights here isn't a problem, there are probably better places to spend your money.

We stayed here for the weekend to attend a family member's college graduation at the university of south carolina. The rooms were nice and clean. The hotel lobby was very nice and the free coffee was a big plus for us. I don't know Columbia very well, but it seemed to be in a good location - just a few minutes drive away from a lot of the places we had to go. There were a lot of people in town for the graduation, so it might have just been that it was a busy time, but it seemed to be a little noisy. We could hear a lot of noise from the hallway and the rooms next to us our first night there. That seemed to calm down by the second night. Other than that, it was a nice place to stay. I wish we had time to take advantage of the fitness center (which looked very nice and new) as well as the indoor pool. It was a very nice stay.

Stayed here for the weekend while on a weekend trip..What can I say the room was awesome! The staff was even better..Very nice and accommodating let us do late check out not once but twice..We originally were only going to stay one night and at the last minute decided to go back they knocked $10 off our rate and again gave us late check out and free breakfast. Great walking distance to a lot of things however we cabbed it which was still only like a $5 charge. Overall good stay it was quiet the beds were comfy the TV was cool and we definitely enjoyed ourselves!
