“Excellent dining experience”
Reviewed April 5, 2012

A friend familiar with the restaurant scene in Columbia referred us to Baan Sawan when I asked for interesting, ethnic food and good ambiance. The decor is simple and elegant, with Thai accents. The menu has classic Thai items and creative, eclectic daily specials round out the options. A nice mix of music plays softly, allowing for conversation. Service was friendly, well informed and efficient. An interesting beer and wine selection is also a plus. We definitely recommend it!

“Amazing”
Reviewed March 24, 2012

I have to commend the staff at Baan for getting it right on so many levels. The atmosphere is laid back yet sophisticated. Baan is the perfect location when dining with vegans and or vegetarians, the chef and staff are incredibly accommodating. Baan is not afraid to offer unique specials that are always stellar....they mix up flavors in inventive, exciting and enticing ways. In Columbia, hands down the most innovative best beer selection around. They know their stuff and share their knowledge in a fun and unassuming manner. Great wine list that changes often...the staff can offer insight into pairing wine with your food. All in all a wonderful establishment, with a totally stellar staff presented in a fun, warm, and inviting atmosphere.

“Best Thai in Cola”
Reviewed November 22, 2011

We just love Baan Sawan. We love the food and the atmosphere. And we don't go there nearly as often as we should. We also go to Miyos and Bangkok, but there is really no comparison, they are all quite different. The ingredients and flavors at Baan Sawan are our favorite by far. The food is never too heavy. Always appreciated in SC.

“Good, but not neccessarily worth it”
Reviewed November 8, 2010

Baan Sawan, in all appearances, is a quaint, family operated business. Once inside, you will notice the warm decor, an inviting atmosphere, and personable service. However, there is a certain level of pretentiousness that permeates throughout the experience (see Manager response to a previously posted and somewhat negative review, with regards to the "formica tabletop cheap" reference to other Thai restaurants in town). As reported in a previous review, the cost of your visit will exceed the quality of food you receive. Although the food is, in itself, enjoyable, it is only as good as sauteed vegetables, a protein, some sort of sauce, and rice plopped in the middle of a plate can be; it in no way warrants the $14-$26 price tag on the entrees, including $14-$16 salads! Also, if you happen to enjoy soft drinks or a domestic light beer with a spicy meal, expect to pay an exorbitant markup on these items. Aside from the price, the experience is satisfactory. The bathrooms were clean, which was a plus. However, if you plan on having a meal in what would be considered a "normal" amount of time, either get there early or try to luck out and get there on a slow night. I have, on more than one occasion, seen it take upwards of 30-45 minutes to receive an entree. Incredulous as it may seem, due to the prices, this wait time appears to be normal; the staff can also be brazenly unapologetic in this regard, in that the only response is to provide excuses, instead of fixing the underlying problem. This brings in to question the ability of the restaurant to take constructive criticism, which in and of itself is not related to a review of the restaurant, but moreover an indication of the slight level of pretension that exists there. In summation, if you would like to enjoy adequate yet expensive food, excused only by a nice alcohol menu and an inviting atmosphere, Baan Sawan is the restaurant for you. However, if you are looking for relaxed yet expedient service, price based on food value and quality, or a nice family restaurant with ANY options for your children, look elsewhere.

“Best Thai Food, Great Service, Upscale Experience”
Reviewed September 9, 2009

All of the ingredients are very fresh, making the flavors vibrant and alive. Each order is individually prepared for you, allowing you to request the amount of heat you prefer if need be. Everyone at our table loved their selections . Servers are smart, not just about the menu but in conversations as well, (that was very nice). It would be easy for us to become a regulars here, if only we lived a little closer to South Carolina.
