“Horrible experience!”
Reviewed March 2, 2009

It all started with pulling in the parking lot. Pack some hiking shoes for the trek. There were no luggage carts or bell boys to help with our bags. We were supposed to have a king bed instead we were sent to a room with two full or queens. The front desk was adament that their computer had not made a mistake. Once they finally got it straightened out we spent the rest of the night sweating in our room. The a/c worked but the thermostat was obviously broken. We set it at 50 and it was still roasting in the room. Also there was only 1 light that worked in the bed area and the tv had a large crack. These problems were reported at check out and the front desk asked how our stay was. When i replied it was horrible she said I'm glad to hear that....obviously was not listening. The manager assured me that my credit card would be refunded and was very apologetic but after 2 weeks no refund. Upon calling for a second time I am still waiting for the refund! Horrible staff!!!!!

On our previous trips to Charleston, we have stayed at the Marriott Courtyard Riverview, but due to some issues there, we decided to stay somewhere else this time.

Even though some of the reviews for Charleston Marriott were less than stellar, we decided to give it a try. I am glad we took the chance because it is a very nice hotel with courteous and helpful front desk staff.

The hotel is recently remodeled and it is gorgeous. It was really a pleasure just walking through the common areas. The patio area is beautiful even though the weather was too cold to enjoy it. They have a very nice business center which we used several times. The in-room internet service worked perfectly. One reviewer stated there was a charge for internet service, but that was not our experience.

The beds and the linens were out of this world. The dual head shower was nice. I really enjoyed the decorating in the room, it really said "Charleston".

There's always a downside though isn't there?

Our room had a nice view, but there was extensive condensation on the INSIDE of the large window. My husband wiped it all down with a towel. We called the front desk to report it, but they didn't seem concerned about it, although they did offer to move us. It wasn't a big deal, so we stayed put. I just hope all the rooms don't have that problem. It would be a shame to ruin that great new carpet they have.

Also, several times in the middle of the night and the early morning, there were some large bangs, so loud it rattled our door in the frame. We never did figure out what it was. It wasn't a guest slamming a door or anything like that. It sounded like something large falling. Maybe they are still doing construction or something.

Despite those two little issues, we are definitely planning to stay here again on our next trip. A great hotel!

Nice hotel, but they put me on the 3rd floor. There is a restaurant on this floor with live music. You can hear it and the people leaving it. It's very loud. Stay away from the 3rd floor if you stay here.

Also, every time the water is turned on or off in the adjoining room I can hear a very loud "thunk." Plumbing needs to be upgraded.

This is not what I expect from Marriott, especially one who stays in a Marriott brand 8-10 times a year.

I'd stay here again but would ask to be in a room far away from the 3rd floor restaurant.

My husband and I stayed at the Charleston Marriott the night we got married, and it was a very romantic getaway for the night! The staff was very polite at the front desk and also in the restaurant! We had chocolate covered strawberries and champagne waiting for us in the room, along with an excellent view of Charleston in our 14th floor room! The room was great with plenty of space for the two of us!

My family decided to stay at the Marriott since they were having the $25 Visa promotion. When we checked in, the clerk informed us that they were out of the Visas. They took our names and wrote them on a sheet of paper. The next day, I was persistent to see if any Visa came in to retrieve mine. A new clerk took my name and sent me on my way. This happened 4 days during the stay.

Needless to say, it's been 4 weeks since we stayed with them and still no Visa checkcard. It's such a joke. The manager should be ashamed for promoting something that doesn't exist!

Due to larger demand than anticipated, the hotel exhausted its supply of $25 visa cards.

The promotion does exist and we are in process of refreshing our supply, as well as, sending visa cards to customers who did not receive during their visit.

An apology has been sent to customer who wrote review and Visa gift card for $25 is on its way.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for just two nights during a 10 day road trip - we stayed at several hotels during this trip and had the opportunity to compare experiences at a variety of hotels in many places throughout the south in a short period. This was by far our least favorite hotel. Our room had a very distinct mildew smell and we later found a wet spot on our carpet, probably from the air conditioning. We considered the rate to be high and wished we would have paid the same or maybe slightly more to stay closer to the historic district. The location of this hotel did not serve our sightseeing needs. Also, they charge for internet, which was annoying considering we had stayed at an Econo Lodge a few days earlier that had free internet (and this was the only hotel we stayed at during this trip that charged for internet). Also, we wanted to do laundry and the map in the room indicated self serve laundry was on a certain floor and when I finally found the room the machines had clearly been removed and removed long ago. When we called the desk for suggestions, they didn't seem too concerned. This seemed to be more of a business hotel than for sightseers. On the positive side, the gym was nice and the pool looked nice too although we did not use the pool. If going to Charleston to sightsee, I'd recommend paying a little more for a different hotel to be closer to the sights - or pay a lot less where you might have a slightly further drive to the sights, but can save some money.

This is a new hotel to the Marriott group and it is wonderful. Great staff, all really helpful, good shuttle bus, lovely pool and bar area, great concierge lounge and the rooms are great. Stay here if you can. Right next to the police station but lovely views of the park and river!
