Our tour guide, Paul, was extremely informative and responsive to questions in providing an alternative to typical plantation tours, by focusing on the enslaved peoples that actually did the work for plantation owners.

The setting is beautiful and relaxing. The house is nice and interesting, but not "grand". Both Confederate and Union forces had headquarters here at different times. The Freedman's Bureau was also hardhearted here just after the Civil War to provide food and help the former enslaved black people. This is really Historic! The Massachusetts 54th was here once.
The so called tour is not a tour at all but a lecture imagining what it may have been like for the enslaved people without any documentation. It is a waste of time. The house tour is self-guided and interesting. The former owner, Mr. McLeod, was an interesting man who lived to an old age.
I recommend this since there is so much history here. It is much older than 1850 under different owners and names.
The old slave houses are very interesting and have the authentic look.
Do not miss this if you have the time.

This is a tour of a plantation from the slaves point of you rather than the owner’s point of view.
It is a wonderful place to visit where are you will get an entirely different perspective about the plantations in the south. Everyone should visit this historic site.

This is a fairly large site. The entrance fee is high, but the visit was worth it.The tour was excellent and IMHO is a must: the tour guides are engaging and knowledgeable, you will learn quite a bit. Teens did not seem to be bored and even deigned to get off their phones.
You can visit the site's website and learn about the times of the tour. We had about 45 minutes (before the tour) and this was barely enough time to walk the parts not covered by the tour: the house and the part of the plantation across the road, the latter was less memorable. Just walking through the plantation gives you a great impression of the spirit of this place.

Not to be missed. The history of the enslavement of African Americans is brought to vivid reality at the plantation by highly informative guides. The plantation is a short Lyft ride from the city center and the site with huge Spanish Moss covered Oak trees is amazing.
