“kids loved the pool”
Reviewed June 9, 2013 via mobile

We usually stay outside of downtown and drive in to Charleston. This trip we decided to stay downtown and chose the King Charles Inn. The location was great. The staff was very helpful, providing us with umbrellas on a rainy evening. However, the rooms are small for the price and there`s not even a continental breakfast included. If you stay here you will be paying for the location. If that`s what is most important to you, you should be happy here. My children loved the pool, and my son thought the doorman was fancy.

Stayed for three nights. Hotel is in the middle of the historic district within easy walking distance to the markets, shops, and harbor. Parking is free and you don't need to use a car once there. I thought the hotel was a bit pricey but it is very clean and well maintained.

My husband and I booked a room at the King Charles Inn for our honeymoon, and loved every second of it! Most importantly, the room was clean and BEAUTIFUL... I was a huge fan of the decor, especially. There was a little "congratulations" note in our room, complete with a few truffles and Charleston's signature benne wafers. How sweet! The location, also, was perfect. The only times we actually needed to use our car were for a quick drive over to Mount Pleasant and to stop by the battery on our way out. Otherwise, we were happy to walk around the beautiful city, and even took advantage of the complimentary umbrellas the front desk had for guests. The staff were friendly and helpful, too. Overall, it was an excellent hotel experience. If we ever make our way to Charleston again, it will not even be a question: we will be staying at the BEST WESTERN King Charles Inn!

We had a room with a queen sized bed. The room was small and looked out on the parking lot, but in all fairness we had requested a quiet room which this was. Some rooms have verandah's and Adirondack chairs. We didn't spring for the bigger more luxurious room. Room had a tub which was nice. There was a manager's cocktail hour every day with wine and finger food out by the pool. It was nice, but there was a charge for the wine. The parking lot is very small so if it's full, they have an overflow lot across the street. Some of the spaces were taken up by construction equipment as the hotel is undergoing some renovations. Restaurant was closed for renovation. They had some complimentary pastries for breakfast downstairs but we found them pretty bad so we went to Starbuck's instead. We felt the hotel was quite expensive for what you got, but the location is excellent. You can walk to everything and you are right across from the market.

Room Tip: Interior rooms are quieter. Meeting Street is pretty busy.

Unfortunately, this reviewer must have stayed here this winter when the restaurant was closed. The construction has been completed! Our new restaurant BREW Pub and Café is open and serving an ala carte breakfast each day. In the evenings, we offer a Welcome Reception serving cheese, crackers and fruit and happy hour pricing at the bar from 4:30-5:30pm and the Bar hours are 3-11pm. I appreciate your feedback and hope you can return to see the finished product. Thank you again.

Very clean! Friendly staff and great amenities. My wife and I stayed here for a long weekend at the end of May before our second child was born. Charleston is an incredibly relaxing place with tons of great food. The hotel is in the perfect location between all the sites on King Street to the North and the Slave Market and East Bay Street to the South. I would definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone visiting Charleston.

I recently stayed at the Best Western King Charles while visiting the beautiful city of Charleston and overall the stay was very good. Here's my view of the good and the bad/not so good.

The Good
- Location was terrific! Walking distance to everything downtown including many great restaurants. Once the car was parked, we didn't move it.
- Rooms were good size and offered plenty of room to move about for 2 people
- Recently renovated rooms and common areas. You could see that they have put some money into maintaining and renovating this hotel. Probably the nicest Best Western I have ever stayed at for sure.
- Nice little wine and cheese with a cash bar for beer and wine everyday.

The Bad/Not So Good
- Place was overpriced, even with AAA discount. $350/night seemed pricey for what we got.
- Restaurant was closed for renovation and we got no warning until we showed up. The breakfast was pretty pedestrian (muffins, donuts, bananna's, coffee). Expected more.
- Parking was very tight. If you don't get in early, you might not get a space.
- No onsight fitness center, had to walk down a side street and pay $5 to workout at a nearby gym. For $350/night the gym pass should be complimentary.
- Balcony rooms had a shared balcony looking out over a parking lot courtyard, not exactly scenic!

I would have given this an average rating if it weren't for the location which was the best aspect of staying here. This place is clean but not a great value. If we go back we'll stay someplace else downtown.

Room Tip: Skip the balcony rooms and save the extra $$$. They are not private and look out to the courtyard p...

Thank you for the nice compliments. I apologize for the temporary breakfast setup during your stay. Our public area's were closed for renovation. You will be happy to know BREW Pub and Café has since opened in May and we offer a simple ala carte, café style breakfast and then we are open 3-11pm at the Bar! As for the pricing, we are one of the more affordable hotels downtown as Charleston has become very popular lately! I hope you can return in the future to experience our upgrades!

Great location within walking distance of almost everything in downtown Charleston. We liked the off street parking under the hotel to park the car. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful regarding directions, recommendations, etc.
