Owner description: On our GULLAH TOUR we give an interesting glimpse into an ancient culture of these mysterious people descending from way across da water. Gullah people are the direct blood descendants of the slaves brought to the Lowcountry regions of South Carolina and Georgia; including both the coastal plain and the Sea Islands. These peculiar people were brought to Charleston by way of cargo slave ships. Charleston held the largest slave market in the United States where the Gullah culture & language continues this very day.

Perhaps the best tour I have ever been on. Mr. Brown is knowledgeable, entertaining, and one amazing driver. His humor gets all participants in a happy mood, and if you ever want a great history of the Gullah culture as well as insightful history of the city, this is the one to take.

“Great tour; not to be missed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2013

Gullah Tours shows you Charleston from a lively African-American POV. However, if would also be a great general introduction to the town.
Not much about the Gullah history, but a fun focus on their colorful language. Guide Alphonso Brown is a smart, energetic & well-informed comedian who knows the city.
It is mostly a rolling tour; we only got off the bus once. The tour is a bit longer than billed.

“An authentic tour of Charleston's back roads and alleys”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2013

The Gullah Tour on a small jitney bus goes through many of the areas of downtown Charleston covered by the horse and buggy tours but continues on to many off the radar spots. Alphonso Brown, the owner and tour guide, sprinkles his commentary with gullah/geechee words and phrases, has a wonderful sense of humor and is very knowledgeable about Charleston and her history and people. Highly recommend this 2 hour tour for under $20!

“Neat Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2013

My wife and I took the Gullah Tour today (2-23-2013) with Mr. Brown. I had heard and read many good things about this tour and wanted to learn more about the Gullah culture and African-American Charleston history and traditions. I was not disappointed! Mr. Brown shares his stories with wonderful enthusiasm and a seeming infinite knowledge. We liked the route and also the fun group of people on the tour. Everyone was interested and involved throughout. It was awesome! As a fellow tour guide myself, I have acquired some new usable information and insights and will certainly recommend this tour to both friends and clients. Thank you, Mr. Brown.

“Best Tour Guide”

Alphonso Brown made our Charleston stay a delight. His tour is informative and he also gave us great places to eat and visit. Our stay would have not been as great without him. What a southern gentleman with a great voice and amazing info about Charleston history and African-American history. Again the TOUR is a MUST!!!!!!
