Well, we ate there twice in the four days we were in Charleston, so that says something. Excellent French bistro/brasserie food in an atmosphere that feels like you are in Paris. It is done by the people who own Hank's seafood, so they know their stuff. The staff was all excellent, knowledgable and cares about the quality of the experience for the guest.

This restaurant has only been open for three months as of late July, 2014, so we were a bit skeptical. We were in for a real treat. The bread brought to the table was a fresh, hot baguette served with salted butter, a critical start for a fine restaurant. It was excellent. We started our dining experience by sharing the escargots. Perfectly prepared in the classic French custom in the shell and smothered with garlic and butter. For the main course, I had I had scallops which were perfectly prepared. I have found there is a 90 second window from under cooking scallops or over cooking them so that they have the consistency of rubber. These were perfectly prepared and very tasty. My wife had the shrimp with linguine and would not share as her dish was so good. For dessert, I had the chocolate pot of cream and my wife had the lemon tarte, a perfect finish for a terrific meal. The wine list is most impressive especially when ordering only by the glass. Very good selection of French wines as one would expect in a fine dining French restaurant. I drank a glass of Sancerre with the escargots and a glass of Chablis with the scallops, both excellent parings. The service was superb, very professional. I asked for a French waiter and a 40 year old professional Parisian took excellent care of us. (Had a 20 minute conversation in French as I have spoken fluent French for 50 years since studying at the University of Brussels, Belgium). He was very professional and knowledgable, but not over bearing. The atmosphere was of a friendly local brasserie as one would expect. Recommended by our tour guide to give it a try, so glad we did. Stopped by around 6 on a Sunday afternoon grabbed a spot at the bar. Beautiful place and great food had a nice bottle of Oregon Pinot Noir to go with Duck Confit, Steak Tartare and Moules Frites, a lovely dish of mussels in white wine and shallots.

This was our best dining experience on our first trip to Charleston. We tried about 10 restaurants and this was by far our favorite! We went based on a recommendation from our concierge. My wife really loved the decor and I really loved the nice, fun atmosphere. Friendly smiling faces when you walk in. We were seated in the front near the window. Our waiter, Blake, was the most knowledgeable server we had on our trip, both with food and wine. He suggested a pinot noir from Oregon called Haden Fig (he wrote it down for us so we can buy more!). It was absolutely glorious and paired perfect with our meals! Also on recommendations, we went with the duck confit and beet/beef salad. This chef knows what he's doing folks! Both of the dishes were spot on! Next, I had the monkfish and the wife went with the scallop dish. Perfectly done and we both agreed that this was one of the best meals we have ever had in our entire life. We didn't do dessert because we were both full but thinking back on it, we should have! A very nice manager came over to chat with us and see how we enjoyed everything. I can't remember his name but he was a tall, friendly gentleman who made us feel very welcome there. We will definitely be back to Charleston and Brasserie Gigi!

We looked at the menu on the advice of a local shop owner and decided to give it a try. Smart move. It made our day in Charleston. Obviously, there are lots of good choices in the downtown area (and suburbs, too!!) and Brasserie GiGi is right up there with the best of them. After only one visit, we can't say everything on the menu is as good as the burgers and the salads, but if you love a Salad Nicoise, this is your kind of place. The other salad, even better, was a very creative and absolutely delicious beet & beef salad, with a dressing to die for. Aside from the food, and we eat in Charleston regularly, we'd probably vote GiGi's staff as among the very friendliest and the most attentive of all our favorite places. We'll be back soon. By the way, the place has super-comfortable booths and a long, half-lit layout we found very agreeable on a hot day. Very attractive bar. Great coffee, too.
