If you want the ambience of Charleston coupled with incredible food and impeccable service eat here. I travel often and world wide; I have spent time on Italy. This resturant captured the essence of Europeam dining. Our waiter, Caleb, did every thing possible to make our meal a wonderful experience. And to top it off, there was a jazz group playing tonight who added a special feel to the evening.

We visited Mercato in December 2011 and had a great meal, so we returned on our March 2013 trip. It was even better than we remembered. The atmosphere is sophisticated but not stuffy, and the food is to. Die. For. Our waiter, Chris, was attentive but not oppressive, and he gave us excellent menu suggestions, including the best shrimp scampi I've ever had. Other stand-outs were the cauliflower pancakes and the Brussels sprouts. I have no idea why this restaurant isn't ranked more highly; it is fabulous!

Mercato has wonderful atmosphere, great employees, and decent food.

Location: near the market, easy access to all local hotels.

Atmosphere: a private nicely decorated dining area, good bar and some window seats if you want to people watch. Good jazz music on the night we went. Really added to the experience. The place was really quiet due to rainy weather and it being a weeknight.

Service: our waiter was awsome, very nive and attentive without being too intrusive. His recommendations were spot on.

Food: the food was very good , just shy of great, but if your a northerner , great southern Italian is a diamond in the rough. Their sauce was very good, but i did not care for the meatballs. Good chicken parm.

Value: prices are steeper than ideal, but if you combine the service , atmosphere and food, its not a bad value.

The botton line: i would go again, and try another dish for sure!
