Holiday Inn Express Charleston Downtown - Medical Area
Ranked #48 of 62 Hotels in Charleston
Reviewed September 5, 2013

We stayed Sep. 4&5 2013 and found this Holiday Inn Express to be a good fit for us. The price was reasonable, the room was very clean and comfortable, the walk to catch the free trolley to downtown was reasonably short, breakfast was good and hot (love their cinnamon rolls) and the staff was responsive. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to visit downtown Charleston without the historic area price. We enjoy this class of hotel because it has the amenities we like (breakfast, pool, gym, free wifi, business center) without the "sheeshee" atmosphere.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your review! We are excited to offer our guests a comfortable and friendly atmosphere where they can be themselves. And I agree...who can resist those cinnamon rolls!?!?

Greeting staff are very friendly and accomodating. Welcome message on the phone after arrival. Room very clean and fresh, carpets not bad. My king room had safe, but no fridge. The bathroom was clean but the lighting was very dim -- equivalent of 40w bulb -- and greenish-olive walls, sort of depressing. All light in the room is from 4 lamp lights -- hope you like your lighting subtle. The main nag is the A/C unit. This being Charleston, you are probably going to want the A/C running most of the time (it was over 90 degrees here today and muggy.) The A/C has no fan speed control, as it has been disabled -- the fan is either OFF or ON, and when it is ON, the constant drone is like what you hear as a passenger on an airplane.

I will say this -- at least the pillows are comfortable, regular-size pillows, not those sofa cushions that some hotels offer.

Parking is sort of strange. When I returned from downtown about 10pm, all the spaces around the hotel were full and I had to park in the lot for the seafood store next door (marked for HI Express patrons).

The hotel is within walking distance of MUSC which is why I chose it. Less expensive for sure than the Downtown/Meeting St hotels. That said, I have had noisy A/C units in more expensive hotels as well, but never had a unit (until now) that was so dominating and with no control over the fan speed. Would I stay here next time? Possibly, depending on pricing, but not enthusiastically.

What a great hotel. Chris at the front desk made check in a breeze and we did not have a reservation. Our tv was fixed in minutes and Chris called to make sure it was fixed to our satisfaction. EVERY employee was super gracious. Will recommend and stay here again another visit. So close to everything and very clean and breakfast was just as special.

I did a lot of research before booking this hotel for our family of 2 adults and 2 kids (2 and 6). We were in Charleston for a wedding but arrived a few days earlier in order to discover and enjoy the city.
The hotel was a very short driving distance to downtown. There is a free city shuttle going from the hotel to the visitor center downtown and beyond but we didn't use it.
Even thought it was so close it is not considered to be in the Historic Downtown area so it offers FREE PARKING and enough of it!
It is a newly renovated hotel so I liked the new mattresses and I also really liked the room furnishing with light blue accents which made the room look modern but also clean and cool.
On clear mornings we could look out our window and see the Ashley river and the bright green marshes beyond – what a nice way to wake up!
Our kids wake up very early and hungry so the included breakfast was a godsend! My 6 year old could be very picky but there was enough variety so she always found something she liked.
About 9 am the breakfast area would get busy but the staff was amazing in busing the tables while people were still eating and cleaning up the empty tables right away so that someone else can use them. I feel we didn't have to wait long at all even when it was very busy. They also did an excellent job of keeping the food items stocked.
We also loved the pool – not very big and in the shade of the building in the mornings which was nice as we were there in the end of August so it was very hot.
Having the little sundry shop was also very helpful when travelling with kids.
We loved how nice and friendly everyone was.
This was our first trip to the South and we found out that at the Holiday Inn Charleston – Ashley River “southern hospitality” is not an empty phrase!
Highly recommend it for families with young kids.

Of all the times to come in-high tide during rain storms! Charleston is below sea level so flooding was immobilizing. Near the river- Not good when you are planning to take the trolley. The hotel was booked also which made things more hectic.
All that aside however, the service at this hotel is outstanding. I felt I was at the luxury hotel in respect to that. It is clean and has a nice lobby with TV and computers in view.
We had reservations at the Hominy Grill which needed to be changed to a later time because of the flooding. The front desk called the restaurant for me to change. I called asking for a number for a cab and they called the cab company for me . When we asked the front desk how long the wait after waiting a while, they called the company again and found out.
For the trolley, the front desk now has a tracker which lets them know how far away the trolley is so you don't have to wait outside too long. Alfonso, readily helped us securing a parking spot and with transporting our bags.
.
Our room, which was one of the two suites available was outstanding. Very clean. What a wonderful view. If you are lucky enough to see the suite available, reserve it right away.It is worth the extra $40 (for us).It was under $200 -so worth it.The suite is two FULL rooms-awesome. The breakfast is very good ,eggs , pancakes, cereals etc.
As far as the location, if you have young children like we do, it is not convenient if you are thinking you will walk and if there during flooding, it is very frustrating. Next door is a boarded up restaurant. The McDonalds luckily was very close within walking distance. (Had to go there instead of Husk(!)-I had made reservations a month prior but because it was so inconvenient to with the flooding, we cancelled.) The Marriott is close by and has a nice restaurant and I believe a rooftop bar, so if you are stuck , I suggest you go there. By that time, we were too tired and waterlogged to go. The neighborhood is iffy. We saw a group of ten year olds wandering the streets and then wandered into McDonalds trying to sell something they made. A little uncomfortable . Overall, however, if there is no flooding and you don't have young children (stay in town) and are looking for great service and value, this is a very nice choice.

I wasn't expecting anything too exciting from a Holiday Inn Express, I chose this place because it had reasonable reviews and it was cheap. I stayed here for a weekend with a friend, and we were both pleasantly surprised with how nice it was. Comfy bed, very friendly staff and the pool is awesome. The main downside of this hotel was the location, as it's quite a walk from downtown (especially in the South Carolina heat). So, this is place is good depending on what you're in Charleston for. If you're planning to spend a lot of time downtown or at the beach, then you would be better off elsewhere (unless you have a car), but otherwise it's a great hotel for the price.

Room Tip: No rooms have a good view so don't worry about trying to find one :P

My wife and I were recently in Charleston for a long weekend and also for her to have a medical procedure at MUSC. Upon returning to this hotel after the procedure, my wife was not feeling well and groggy due to the anethesia. One of the staff members, Carolyn, noticed I was having some difficulty getting her to our room so she stopped her work and came to our assistance. She assisted us to the room, brought ice and offered to help in any way. The next morning she recognized us in the breakfast area and asked her how she was doing. This was an example of going above and beyond which was very much appreciated.

Please recognize her for this extra effort...

This hotel is very convenient to MUSC and the front desk staff was very nice and accommodating. The queen beds are very comfortable. Also, the free wifi worked very well.

Room Tip: The queen bed room is larger.
