“Great customer service!”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

We decided to stay at holiday inn express downtown for a wedding, and it was the perfect choice! Customer service is a dying art, so it was refreshing to have great customer service. I have no complaints about the hotel, and recommend it to everyone! It's a great location, and the parking is free unlike other downtown hotels. Also the free continental breakfast was amazing! There were so many choice, much better than any other hotel's breakfast! I could not say enough great things about this hotel!

We were planning a last minute trip to Charleston for the weekend and every hotel downtown was wayyy out of budget – high season prices!

We decided to take the Hotwire route and got this 3-star hotel for a good price. The location is convenient, maybe 5-10 minutes to drive into downtown or a 15 minute trolley ride. You can walk through the parking lot to catch the free city trolley (DASH). I believe they run every 20 minutes or so, but the hotel has maps at the front desk. This hotel also has free parking, so that’s a big savings compared to downtown hotels.

The hotel is recently renovated, so everything is clean and modern. We were impressed that every staff member was so friendly and welcoming – everyone we saw throughout the hotel was smiling and saying hello to us. Very refreshing!

Our room was also clean and modern, the bed was comfy and there was a new TV and a hairdryer in the bathroom (shower was also great, very hot, good pressure). There is safe in the room, but if the previous guest did not clear the code, you have to call to get it reset. The person who came to reset it for us was just as friendly as the rest of the staff and took care of it for us.

Breakfast was included with our stay, it included: cereal, pancakes, eggs, biscuits, bacon, toast/muffins, yogurt, juice/coffee/milk. They also had bowls of fresh fruit throughout the eating area. It got really busy around 9-10, so make sure you go a little early to beat the rush. They were trying to keep up with everyone coming down at once, but they kept running out of the “hot food.” We just went earlier the second day and it was fine.

There isn’t a bar or restaurant on site, but we checked out the rooftop bar next door at the Marriott one night – it was really nice (but pricey). Something for you to check out if you want to stay pretty close to your room.

So that was all the good stuff. I only have one gripe about this place. The air conditioning unit was unbelievably loud. It woke me up every time it started to run. It sounds like a plane is taking off! If the management doesn’t believe this complaint, they should try sleeping in room 810 one night. We were there with family and they said their air conditioning unit was just as loud as ours.

So, if everything else convinces you to go here and you’re a light sleeper – bring your ear plugs!!! I was wishing I had some every time that beast came on!

Thank you for the wonderful review! You really hit everything right on the head. We have gotten quite a bit of feedback on the air units in the room and have absolutely been looking into it. We do hope you visit us again.

Unfortunately this is my first review of a property that we needed to stay at due to a family medical condition. The level of professionalism, and customer service was amazing. My family needed to be close to the Medical University on several occasions.( we are not done with treatments yet) We were always met with a smile when we checked in. Our rooms have always been ready, clean and comfortable, and what you would expect for a Holiday Inn Express. Yes, the AC system is a bit dated and makes some noise, but they all do this. Breakfast is great and always fresh.

The room and service was great, ideal for a tourist base in the city, near to the tram stop so free transportation around the town and no parking fees a big bonus. The staff were uber freindly, and the breakfast was adequate to get you started for the day... the pool is a nice touch.
If I am critical of anything it is a problem not solely with this hotel but I found in most US hotels of this level to have window AC units which are soooooooo noisey, I know it is hard to retro fit a ducted system but splits would be quieter.

Room Tip: get a room on the south side it is quieter.

We came into town to visit friends and found very few pet friendly choices. This hotel is very well located, extremely clean and very pet friendly. It is pricey for a Holiday Inn Express but the location makes it a very favorable choice. We were charged $25 for the pet and we were allowed to leave our dog unattended in the room (crated of course). The room was extremely small but again, clean & efficient. Breakfast was good.

I was in Charleston for a wedding at the Citadel. The room rate was $179/night, $100 more than the night before and I'm pretty confident nothing changed to make that room worth that much more. I was booked into a King room. The room was small but adequate. It had a refrigerator and a coffee maker. The bathroom was clean but small as well. I couldn't help but think that everything about that room was just small. The one HUGE downer was the noise. The air conditioner was so loud that I was really glad that I was in a condition to sleep soundly when I came back from hitting the town. It really is super loud.
The staff was SUPER SUPER friendly from the front desk to the very kind cleaning crew. The breakfast offered variety and was well stocked on a very busy weekend. If anything gives this hotel a 5 star rating it is the staff.
That said, the location is a bit sketchy. I felt safe but it really is on the border of what didn't appear to be a safe part of Charleston.
Though not located in downtown Charleston, the drive there was easy and the taxi services abundant. A group of us grabbed a taxi van to head downtown and he charged us $5/person. That was perfect!
I did not use any of the amenities (pool, etc) so I won't review that.
Ultimately, I would not have paid that rate for that room except for the fact that this occasion was super special. This is definitely NOT a $179/night hotel for the room, the amenities nor the location.
I would definitely stay here again but not for $179/night.

Thank you for your review. We appreciate you giving our staff 5 stars! Rooms in Charleston are at a premium on weekends especially during the time of your visit. We are able to offer competitive rates just outside the Historic District and close to The Citadel, Brittle Bank Park, and Joe Riley Stadium.

My husband & I recently spent 4 nights. The staff was always friendly & helpful, Rooms were updated & clean, located very close to downtown (around 10 min drive) However, the breakfast could've used a little work but, you can't expect a lot when it is free. All in all A great stay. We fully plan to return.
