“Steaks are great and love the booths...”
Reviewed November 5, 2010

We were traveling with friends from England and after having 2 days of seafood; we all wanted a steak. The men ordered the 26 oz rib-eye and they loved them! I had a fillet small but perfectly cooked and one of our party had their famous hamburger. We sat in a round booth which was perfect for 4 by the front window, street side. For some reason I like sitting in a booth in a steakhouse! We spent as much on our wine as food, so the bill probably was higher than normal. The gent from England said the best steak he ever had. Service is attentive, but not overwhelming. Owner/hostess was very gracious and made us feel very welcome and thanked us for coming and enjoyed us livening up the restaurant since the non-brits are loud and from Philly!

“Identity Crisis”
Reviewed October 18, 2010

We had eaten at this restaurant on our last trip to Charleston several years ago and couldn't wait for a return visit, but this time we came away disappointed. We ate upstairs in a very elegant room with celings at least 15 feet high and huge palladian windows--a lovely venue; however, the piped in 60's music--so loud we requested it be turned down--did nothing for the ambiance. My partner ordered a steak--no complaints there. I had chicken Marsala and although it wasn't bad, I've had much better. Inasmuch as The Oak is described as an Italian-American restaurant, I would expect the few Italian dishes listed on the menu to be top-notch. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, but never offered coffee with dessert--had to ask for it. Inasmuch as menu prices are up there with some of the better restaurants in Charleston, The Oak needs to elevate the food and the ambiance. Sadly we only half-heartedly give this restaurant a recommendation.

“Good & Bad”
Reviewed September 27, 2010

Our group of 8 dined at The Oak on 9/17. It was during restaurant week so I'm sure it was busier then normal. Service was good, the apps, steaks & most sides were wonderful. I had the surf & turf with Filet & crab cake. The filet was awesome the crab cake just average. The big disappointment were the whipped potatoes. I don't know if they had ran out & made them fast but they were worse then KFC's. All the other sides were really good. I'm just a potato person when it comes to a side with a steak. The pairing at Council Oak inside The Hard Rock Resort in Hollywood, FL is far better but also a lot farther away. Next visit to Charleston we'll try The Charleston Grill House.

“Pick a different restaurant for Restaurant Week”
Reviewed September 12, 2010

Oak Steakhouse kicked off our Restaurant Week experience. Unfortunately, the dishes, which did not match what Oak had advertised and were lacking in substance and flavor. The kabob appetizer was not cooked well and the beef was stringy. The entree fillet, while somewhat flavorful, lacked the richness of a true aged piece of beef. The final course, the banana bread pudding was horrid, an undercooked melange of flavorless raw hard banana. If you're going to spend this type of money, there are many restaurants you should be trying (High Cotton's fillet is exceptional) during restaurant week.

“Good, but Overrated/Overpriced”
Reviewed September 12, 2010

We had been looking forward to visiting this restaurant all week. We waited to visit until our last night in town which happened to be a Friday night.

It took the staff ten minutes to seat us at our table even though we had reservations (and I think you must) The restaurant was noisy. The staff were running up and down the stairs frantically, and were relatively inattentive.

Nothing on the menu under thirty dollars. The staff is happy to accommodate sharing of portions, but still over priced. We ordered a rib-eye steak that only comes in 36 oz portion, and split it. The steak came on a cast iron platter, which at first we thought was great because the steak was still sizzling when it came to the table, however, by the time we were half way through our meal the steak was over cooked. The dipping sauces we ordered with our meal were rather bland. Overall, this was not the experience we were hoping to have.
