Charleston is a foodie city. That being said, there are numerous options and you should try all of them if you can. Tristan (which came recommended by a tour guide) is a farm-to-table, upscale (but not pretentious) opportunity to taste many different Southern flavors remixed in a new way. We ordered the "Chef Tasting" menu which gave us the opportunity to try at least six different dishes in a manageable way. All were interesting, creative, stimulating, and enjoyable. We ate early (for the South) and had no trouble getting a reservation on a Friday night. Any later and we would have missed the opportunity to try this lovely place.

It would be easy to ignore Tristan in Charleston. The entrance is slightly tucked away amongst shops and cafes. It is an absolute gem The food is miles away from the Southern fried food that dominates many of the Chaleston eateries. Beuatifully presenetd, fresh produce with a French touch. The staff are friendly, well informed and the atmosphere is relaxed. The factthat from some tables you can see into the kitchen is another bonus! It's not the cheapest place to eat but certainly one of the best. We went on 2 consecutive nights we were so delighted.

The food was amazing, especially the beef carpacio. When they heard it was my 30th birthday they brought out an assortment of desserts with "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate. We did learn that most people eat dinner in Charleston after 8 (we went at 7 and were the only people in the restaurant for a whole). It was great!

We had a very enjoyable dinner at Tristan. Contemporary decor was a welcome break from the historical look. Food presentation was lovely. Food quality was outstanding and the service was friendly and helpful without being over the top.
