We just enjoyed one of the best pizzas since visiting Italy. True, the topping choices were a bit different than those one would find in Italy (broccoli rabe and peppadew) but the sauce was perfect as was the thin, thin slightly chewy crust. My kind of pizza and atmosphere, no knife and fork required or needed. We ordered the large San Genaro which came with plenty of sausage and peppadew (red peppers which are quite sweet and which I would skip next time) and took a couple of pieces home. Pizza came fast and service was great. Loved it!

DeSano is a hidden gem near the bottom of the Ravenel bridge, just off of East Bay. I learned of it from a friend, who loves it. Today was my 3d time having lunch there, and it didn't disappoint. The pizza has been consistently very good. Crust is fantastic- cooked in their wood fired oven, it's just the right thickness and not too yeasty, like some pizza crust is. The toppings were fresh (we had the margherita and the capricciosa). Both were great (my crew preferred the margherita of the two). Beverage selection is good, save for the wine options, which are not so good.

Although it's a bit different from your typical pizza place, I like the physical space of the restaurant. It is large and open, and has a warehouse type feel- but it's extremely clean. From the tables, can watch them make dough in the dough room, or watch them make your pizza. There is also ample parking, which is a big plus in Charleston.

If you like the thin, crispy crust that is unique to a wood-fired pizza oven and fresh ingredients, then your search is over.

The pizzas here are not your typical custom made-to-order type. Diners choose from several pre-selected fresh topping combinations, each with its own name. We tried the DeSano which had pepperoni, sausage and fresh mozzarella. Ours exceeded expectations. We found the sausage to be particularly good.

Here's where things get a little ...um, well, unusual and we liked that. The place is set up so that orders are placed at the front counter. Entering the dining area, you will find a warehouse setting with darkened butcher block picnic tables and the performance kitchen before you (no. interior walls). The kitchen staff were clearly having fun. Imagine Pike Place fish market and replace the fish with pizza dough. Go for the great pizza, bring your playful side and enjoy.

It's hard to imagine why this chain (other locations in Nashville and East L.A.) chose to position itself as it has in the world of Charleston dining. It's hard to find, hard to get to even if you know where you're going, and way off the beaten track. Look around when you finally find it and get out of your car and you'll see there's absolutely nothing attractive about the location. Inside it's order at a counter and they bring it to your table. You can get wine but only by the bottle! You can also BYOB and there's no corkage fee. Beer is available by the bottle (not just by the six pack or by the case, thank goodness). Make your way into the main dining area and you're transported into one of the strangest environments I've ever eaten in, a huge open space filled with high and low picnic tables on which there are rolls of paper towels and containers of plastic forks and knives. The space is shared by the three huge pizza ovens imported from Italy as well as the window into the dough room and entry door into the walk-in cooler. Industrial doesn't quite describe it. I would say it's more like a cross between my high school cafeteria and Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Salads arrive in plasticware. Pizzas come on huge metal trays. Get up and get your own parmesan cheese and crushed red pepper if you want it. BUT, now dig in to the best pizza in town!!! Despite the strangeness of the experience, the pizza is outstanding with only the freshest ingredients and delicious thin crust a la Napoli. The mozzarella, flown in from Italy no less, is beyond belief and melts in your mouth when eaten on the caprese salad. Bottom line...not a fine dining experience, probably not even the place you want to take business associates to discuss your next project, but definitely a place to go for the freshest, tastiest pizza in town.

Desano's is new to the Charleston peninsula and is located on the Eastside, not downtown. The pizzas are delicious and contain only fresh ingredients. The restaurant space is rustic, utilitarian and loud. There are families with small children who sound even louder than normal because of the "warehouse" space that hte pizzeria uses. However, there are times when that doesn't matter and you are craving a good pizza. This is the place on the peninsula.
