You are spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out in Charleston and East Bay Street alone is wall to wall restaurants. High Cotton, right in the middle of all the action, is a large buzzing eatery with wood flooring and nice vibe. It's not a one off but part of a small chain of restaurants focused on South Carolina; indeed there is another High Cotton in Greenville but don't be put off by it being a chain; this is good quality cooking with a Southern twist. Our starter of fried oysters were good although maybe the coating of breadcrumbs could have been lighter. The entrees of Pork Chop and Lowcountry boil were excellent however and the presentation first class. Only some overly fried (read burnt) brussel sprouts let the sides down somewhat. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. For the quality of the cooking its pretty good value too.

My Charleston based Organization was celebrating its anniversary and deserved a special afternoon. We chose the private dining room at High Cotton. The carpeting had recently been replaced with wood flooring, which made the noise level almost unbearable. It might have been overlooked had the food been edible. The meal was incredibly disappointing: Hard rolls, undercooked hamburgers, smoked salmon salads practically devoid of salmon, chicken caesar lacking enough chicken and caesar dressing. The charming Wait Staff did their best to handle the flow of food going back into the kitchen. But what really left the bad taste in all our mouths was the way the management responded to our evaluation of the meal. At every turn, they tried to justify it. Even worse, they tried diverting the criticism to the planning, which had been excellent. To paraphrase a familiar line, "It was the food, stupid." And it ultimately was stupid to be treated this way. My Organization has 200 members who live in Charleston and had previously held a high opinion of High Cotton. None of us shall return under any circumstances or bring our out of town guests. Out of towners reading this email should think twice before selecting this Restaurant or its companion Slightly North of Broad. There are too many fine Restaurants in Charleston to settle for mediocre food and a defensive management.

We had an awesome dinner just recently at High Cotton. My pork, and partner's lamb were probably the best we have ever had, or at least close to it. This rivals NYC, LA, San Fran, Chicago restaurants that we have tried. (and may i say much cheaper than those cities too! ) . Would not hesitate to recommend this as a 'fine dining' experience for anyone.

This is one of our favorite restaurants in Charleston.
We love to have Sunday Brunch and Dinner at this lovely restaurant.
The live jazz is such a delightful touch to enjoy while dining.
The food is always fresh and delicious and perfectly presented.

Friends and I came here on a whim based on reviews online. Well none of us really enjoyed what we ordered.

The service was superb and and atmosphere was nice.

I ordered some gazpacho, expecting a lovely cool tomato soup, well no it tasted more like it should go on salad. It honestly tasted like I was drinking salad dressing and i didn't finish it. Other people at the table ordered fish, I believe salmon and it was OKAY for what it was. Tables around us were also complaining, so it perhaps was an off day.

Because of this I'll give it a 4 because everyone was welcoming I just think I should've made some better food choices on another day.
