Narrowing the restaurant choices to only one in a foodie city such as Charleston could be an impossible task. However our previous visits to Charleston Grill made it our "go to" destination when it came time to celebrate my recent milestone birthday. Always a standout...Always perfection...Always inventive and exciting...

For our most recent dinner, Husband started with one of Charleston Grill's signature crabcakes. It was full of lump crab; crisp on the outside and creamy in the center. Addictive! I ordered the octopus salad as a first course. The salad was tender, flavorable and memorable. Husband enjoyed his main course of lacquered duck breast and I adored the seared flounder with shrimp and grits. Because it WAS my birthday, I chose the indulgent Caramel Tasting for dessert. Our waitperson, Kristen, assisted us in choosing perfectly matched wines by the glass for each course, including an Inniskillin ice wine to accompany the caramel treats. Service was perfect and so was the live music...Jazz, smooth and discreet. Thank you Charleston Grill for a wonderful birthday celebration.

The rack of lamb was delicious, as was the salmon and the side of potatoes au gratin, but when the teenager wants pasta with olive oil and parm and the waiter says, "No problem," you go from fine dining to fun dining, and the latter is always better.

Trying to give an outstanding restaurant a ''score'' when only given a 5-ranking system is a bit of a disservice since many places fall somewhere between Excellent and Very Good. But within that continuum there are some really excellent dining experiences that are camouflaged by others ranked as excellent but falling closer to very-good. So I will use a number scale w/in my text to further quantify my ranking from here on out.

That being said, Charleston Grill is for sure a 10-point out of 10-points. Even on TripAdvisor it is ranked #1 out of 533 restaurants (as of last week) but as of this writing it is ranked #3 (and I suppose it depends on how many reviews it gets things can flux). Anyway you look at it, ranking in the top 3 in over 500 restaurants is a pretty good record.

We booked a reservation via OpenTable in an ''off time'' and coped 1000 points (that ain't too bad). We dined at 6:30PM and it was a most enjoyable experience. We did have to impose upon our waiter to move to a quieter table. We were unfortunately placed alongside a part of 8 or so whose birthday boy had a booming voice that assaulted the ear drums. No problem, despite the original waiter potentially losing a fat tip, he relocated us to make us more comfortable. We did notice quite a number of tables seating 4 or more and those can get boisterous after the first bottle of wine, so keep that in mind when you are first seated. Wouldn't want that to ruin a meal.

We opened up with:

Cucumber Gazpacho- Tomatoes, Avocado, Celery, Herbs, a total explosion of well-balanced flavors and very clean.

Petite Lettuces- a salad with Strawberries, Marcona Almonds, Basil, Mint, Sharon admits that the Mint made the salad.

From the kitchen t/out our meal were ''gifts'' from the chef... an appetizer something to cleanse our palate and finally an assortment of chocolates after dessert.

Our large plates were:

Southern Pork Chop on a grits and corn bed.

Rack of Lamb with accompaniments.

Dessert was what pushed us over the edge, we were comfortably satieted, but could not resist and opted for Milk Chocolate Hazelnut Semifreddo atop a Balsamic Gastrique, Cocoa Nib Streusel, Meringues. At that point we were uncomfortable, but we could have taken it to go.

To top the evening we were entertained by a duo of Charleston musicians (father and son) one on a violin the other a classically strung guitar and they played popular tunes we could recognize and enjoy.

Wife had a Chocolate Martini (one of the best she has ever had) and I had a glass of wine (healthy serving) of a Malbec. All in all, with tip we laid out $180 for the evening.

With recent visits to some of Charleston top places to dine recently we have been disappointed with the consistent HIT and MISS at the table. But have to say this was a 100% HIT dinner. For foodies, a MUST see.

We ate at the Charleston Grill on our first night, on our first visit to Charleston. The only complaint...that every restaurant after that was a step down. Ambiance..excellent; live music...refined and soft, not loud..excellent; service...reserved, prompt and dignified...excellent; the food...over the top. My wife and I tried six different courses and they were all excellent, their wine selection with those courses was spot on. Our server, I believe her name was Kara, was right on with her recommendations and made the evening special. If you do nothing else in Charleston, go to the Grill.

My wife and I travel to Charleston on a regular basis and we have been at the Charleston Grill many times.

We have realized that during the last 12 - 15 month the food has become even more delicious and refined. We dine all over the world but I can truly say that the Charleston Grill can compete with the Top American - Food addresses in New York, San Francisco and all over the world.
