Not many times do I have any reason to even write a review for a "dive" bar. That is basically what the Griffon is. It is dark and seedy inside (just how you would like a bar to be) but has some really cool features and an incredibly well-executed menu that really separates it from anywhere else.
The beer selection and price is really reasonable for downtown Charleston. The food which is sort of a mix between old English and American bar food has never let me down. The fish and chips are excellent. The burgers are top-notch. I even have to admit to ordering the fried chicken for carry-out during the work week to enjoy with the ladies in my office - we are all hooked.
It isn't the place for a business meeting or for a romantic night out - at all! But if you are grabbing a bite or a few cold ones with some friends you really can't go wrong here. The location is also nice because it is close to a garage (1 block up) and the Waterfront Park downtown (25 yards to the left when you walk out of the restaurant). The 1,000s of dollar bills hanging from every nook and cranny also give the spot an interesting sort of flair.
