Description: Chef Marc Collins draws inspiration from many cuisines around the world to create a menu that is truly unique to the Charleston restaurant scene. Drawing inspiration from historic Southern dishes and always highlighting what is local and in season, Chef Collins puts a healthful, distinctive spin on classic Lowcountry dishes. This means there is less butter and cream than typically seen on Southern menus. Whole grains are incorporated to dishes and ingredients are used at the peak of flavor. The result is satisfying dishes that retain their bright, bold flavors without the large amounts of fat found in many restaurant dishes. From our Plantation Rice Bread Rolls made in house daily, to the selection of local seafood, to Pastry Chef Lovorn’s incredible desserts, each dinner at Circa 1886 celebrates the region we call home. Let our professional, attentive, experienced and knowledgeable staff guide you through the menu and help select a wine that is a perfect pairing for food and budget.

It was great, food was gormet, excellent, atmosphere was there all the
way, wait staff was efficient. Was not really reasonable on price but I
didn't expect it to be in downtown with all the above going for it.

Having read very good reviews of Circa 1886, we were looking forward to a very nice meal. Unfortunately, the reality did not match our expectations and we had one of the very few Charleston dining experiences that we would not wish to repeat. We may be jaded by the likes of Grill 225, Hall’s Chophouse, La Fourchette, etc., but we found Circa 1886 to have dull décor bordering on the shabby, less than professional (i.e., ‘overly familiar’) service, and most importantly, much less than great food. In particular, the grilled lettuce salad was less than wonderful and the steak was underdone while the warm lettuce on which it was served was very unappetizing as were the overcooked prawns. It was the first time that we left a Charlestown restaurant actually commenting we could have had a better meal at home. I could go on, but I suspect that I have communicated the essence of our experience—one visit was one too many!

As owners and the Chef, we sincerely apologize that you were disappointed in your dinner experience in October, two months ago at Circa 1886. We wish that you had alerted the waiter or manager of the service and food issues, because your disappointments would have been corrected to your satisfaction. We are disappointed that you chose to express yourself in your only review written on TripAdvisor, because it is our goal to have great reviews from 100% of our guests.

Sincerely, Richard Widman and Chef Marc Collins, Co-Owners

Having surgery the next day I wanted to have a quiet dinner with my daughter in law who accompanied me to Charleston. 1866 was my choice and I could not have made a better decision in terms of food quality, service, ambiance, attention to detail, attention to reservation request.
An excellent evening .

We had a very good experience at Circa 1886. The food was mostly excellent (antelope was excellent; key lime pie was unusual and a real treat; wreckfish was excellent but served with beans that were too bland). Service was excellent. It was enjoyable to be at a restaurant where they have trained the waitstaff. Main dining room was fairly noisey with some large groups, but we were in the end room of all small tables and it was very nice.

Very nice location in the historic district behind the hotel. Went for a birthday dinner. Could not ask for a more romantic setting. The food was wonderful. We had duck and red snapper. Both prepared to perfection. Nice wine selection and the waiter was very knowledgeable. Cannot wait to return.
