One of the things that we were looking forward to on our trip to Charleston was having Carolina barbeque. Bessinger's didn't disappoint. The pulled pork was delicious! We tried both of the sauces, I loved the Hickory Red, my husband the mustard based. The fries were good, the onion rings were huge. Grab a sandwich bag of pork rinds to snack on while you are waiting for your lunch. The staff was friendly, the restaurant clean and the atmosphere was great. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to others.

My wife and I picked up a couple chopped pork sandwiches here and found their Carolina-style barbecue worth the trip. The flavor was sweet with a mustard finish. The flavor was mild enough that the smoke flavor came through nicely. Items were prepared upon order in a kitchen that was really hopping; obviously a local favorite spot for BBQ.

Had lunch at this restaurant and for the price was very disappointed with what was served. The bun was stale and the pork was dry with blackened burnt pieces mixed in with the dry pieces of pork. The steak style fries were dry and the onion ring was so over cooked it was crunchy. The staff cleaning the dining room used the same dirty towel on the condiments, seats and tables over and over again with out ever cleaning the cloth. At almost $10.00 per person for lunch it was very expensive for the quality of the food. No one ever stopped at our booth to ask if everything was satisfactory. Lesson learned, will not ever eat there again.

We are very sorry for the unsatisfactory visit. We strive to serve the freshest and best quality food we can find. We have FRESH bread deliver to us daily, so I will check to see how it was possible that the bread was stale. The onion rings can be crunchy from time to time, but usually aren't. The Black pieces of the BBQ is the outside of the meat that is smoked ion the pit and is very normal. i will check on the dryness factor, but hams are typically dryer than boston butts or shoulders as they tend to be a much greasier cut of pork. The dining room staff will be spoken to about the sanitation issue and again we are sorry no one came to speak with you. The owners and managers are in the dining room dozens of times throughout the night and day, but sometimes we get busy or something else is demanding our attention at that time.

Not a bad sandwich shop, nice variety of choices. We had the pulled pork and chicken sandwiches. Large sandwiches, baked beans were tasty. Onion ring was large but soggy and greasy. French fries were good. We walked to the shop from our hotel and traffic in parking lot was very busy due to drive through activity. Worth a stop if you are going by. Average price for a sandwich around $6. You order at the counter and pick up there when your beeper goes off - they could better arrange the ordering and pickup - hard to navigate when crowded.

Bessingers is bit out of the downtown but a great stop if you're on the road to or from Magnolia or Middleton.

The style of BBQ is different than Texas style but it is certainly good. The "secret" yellow sauce is some sort of honey mustard and the red is a more traditional sauce. The ribs were good and the chicken was better. Nicely smoked, very tasty.

I had a better meal here than at Melvin's Ribs & Que which might be related (Melvin Bessinger founded it). Not sure why this location was better but it certainly was. I enjoyed the meal.
