Every city has restaurants ranging from good to great restaurants and Charleston certainly has more than its share. From well known celebrity run establishments to local eateries that could be featured on TV shows like Diners, Drive Inns & Dives. Knowing I was heading there for a day I received many tips as to which restaurant to try. My son in law had recommended a local favorite that he had tried so based on his recommendation I decided to give Hymans a go. My first impression was that this is a tourist haven. The building is old and reeks of history. It’s bustling with activity and a tad noisy but casual and comfortable. As we were led upstairs to the second floor I noticed the walls throughout the place were loaded with photos of celebrities much like you would see in many restaurants in NYC. As we were seated we saw small riveted plates on each table commemorating the celebrity who sat there. If all the people represented were actually here it should be known as Hollywood East. I do not doubt its authenticity just amazed by it. All this had the aroma of a tourist trap until our wait staff appeared. They were young, welcoming, energetic and efficient. They greeted us with a smile and treated us like family members they actually liked. They were very helpful and patient in explaining everything on the large and varied menu. I was set on a local favorite of Crispy Fish. While waiting for our order the waiter stopped by 2-3 times to see if there was anything he could get for us. As well, one of the owners, Ely, stopped over and welcomed us and thanked us for choosing his establishment. Not unusual for this place but very refreshing. The fish was cooked to perfection. It was a crispy flounder served as a heads off whole fish that practically fills the entire plate. They present it in a way that’s scored and easy to eat. It was fresh and excellent. They give you salad and plenty of sides so you are full when you leave. There are plenty of good restaurants to choose from in Charleston. If you have only one day my suggestion is change your plans and stay a few extra days and enjoy as many as you can.
