“Gracious Dining in Charleston”
Reviewed September 7, 2009

We dined at Cypress as part of an anniversary celebration trip. We loved this restaurant! We started off with a caesar salad that was made tableside - a very dying art ... we had not seen this offered in years. Our waiter, Joe, was very experienced at this and did a fabulous job. Dinner was a rack of lamb for two. This was delicious - it rivaled the lamb we had when in Greece a few years ago! The wine selections were amazing ... there is a three story wall of wine in this restaurant. Joe gave us some very good recommendations on wines to enjoy with our food. We ordered the chocolate lava cake to share for dessert and it came with a little chocolate plaque that had "happy anniversary" on it! A very pleasant surprise. This restaurant in not cheap, but for a celebration, we completely enjoyed ourselves. They do not rush you at all through your meal and invite you to linger as long as you wish over your coffee. We highly recommend this restaurant for a celebration dinner.

“Our first decent meal”
Reviewed August 30, 2009

You're spoilt for choice in Charleston as regards the dining scene and both the hotel receptionist and our guide book recommended this restaurant. We were going to dress up and go the following night but as we were passing popped in to make reservation. It was early, by European standards, but they had space there and then so we stayed and ate.

Good, friendly service - excellent wine list and lovely food. What more could you ask for?

“What's the Buzz?”
Reviewed August 29, 2009

On a recent visit to Charleston, we choose two different restaurants for each night we were in town. Cypress was one of the restaurants we picked. With all the places to pick from in Charleston, we would probably try many other places first when we come back to town again. The overall food was very good and no real complaints about the service but felt that my special requests that were made on my reservation through OpenTable were completely ingnored and or not acknowledged. We had requested a a special table location with a view or what ever special location the restaurant would suggest.
When we arrived for dinner I had advised that we had a reservation and was ignored and we were sat somewhat in the middle of the restaurant at a not so special table. Never asked if we were there for a special occasion (which we were) our Anniversary. The evening did not have a special feeling... Don't get me wrong, the food and service were just fine, but that's it, just fine... This could have been any dining experience in a redone bricky lofty structure in anywhere USA. More personal touch and attention to detail would make a big difference. if you are into the yuppy detached feeling this might just be your place...

“skip the dinner and go for a drink”
Reviewed August 10, 2009

This restaurant had great ambience. The selection is small but that isn't the main problem. The dishes are seasoned incorrectly, the meat is very low quality, and they try to pass it off as fine cuisine. I ordered chicken and it was molded into a round shape with bacon around it. It was in a sauce with andouille sausage but the sausage was not anything like andouille and so salty. One of the meals was supposed to come with polenta but it was very watery grits with a fake lemony taste - very weird. The soup was local squash but it was more like baby food seasoned with an extreme amount of nutmeg. They offered a special bread with pork fat and butter mixed with pork fat. Everything was salty. The best thing was a crab cake that I had for an appetizer. It was fine but nothing special. The ambience is very pleasant and to go to this restaurant for drinks would probably be fun. The service is pleasant in demeanor but very amaturish. Please don't be fooled. We ended up spending over $200 and definitely got caught by this tourist trap. I think that most people want this meal to be great because the place is so fun to be in but the taste buds are hard to fool and you may not be able to be fooled. I usually only write reviews for places that I know have taken a customer's hard-earned money and not provided a worthwhile experience or have provided an exceptional experience. Unfortunately this place falls under the category of the former.
