We went to the Peninsula Grill last evening to celebrate our anniversary - and celebrate we did! The dining room is absolutely beautiful as you enter through the very cozy bar area. We were greeted not by one - but three staff of the restaurant who escorted us to our table. Our waiter Joel was wonderful - and made us feel right at home from the very start.

As for wine - a great list with varying levels of sophistication and price. The food selection is diverse - and every bite was delightful. We enjoyed the oyster sampler, the soup sampler, the lobster trio and then for the main course the glazed shrimp and veal rib chop. Save room for the famous coconut cake. It's reputation lived up to every mouthful.

Peninsula Grill is a Relais & Chateaux - and lives up to its standards!

When the focal point of a restaurant is have a set of servers stand behind each diner to place the plates in front of the entire table is a single moment, you realize that food isn't the focus. $30+ for a 2-3 oz serving of swordfish is offensive, particularly when it was dry and tasteless. Overall, the menu was adequate but the execution was week. Likely too dependent on its convenient location the the market and it pretentious "elegance".

Pretense is not part of our guest's experience at Peninsula Grill. Pride however is. Our servers deliver our food knowing that Chef Graham Dailey and his staff have prepared the best cuisine in Charleston. Our organized delivery is not flambouyant and announced as it would be if we were looking for approval or showing off. It is done quietly, elegantly, without fanfare. Our food and service has made Pensinsula Grill the place to dine in Charleston. We are very proud of that.

I am sorry that the swordfish was not to your liking. We feature a local swordfish and serve a generous half pound portion. If you were unhappy with the portion or the preparation we would have gladly replaced the Swordfish with another item or another serving.

I have sent a private response to you as well. I hope to get a response from you. I am sorry that you left Peninsula Grill with such a horrid opinion of us. I hope that we get the opportunity to change that opinion.

I'm certain we must have dined at the Peninsula Grill on an "off night" (Tuesday, June 18). While our expectations were admittedly high (based on the numerous reviews we had read), our meal and overall experience fell a bit short. Not by a great deal...but enough so we'd probably try another highly recommended restaurant when we next visit Charleston. It's a shame. The dining room is attractive and the decor is in harmony with its Charleston historic district location. And the staff is trying hard to please...it's obvious...and, for the most part, they succeed. Entering from the adjacent Planters Inn Hotel, one passes through a small, attractive bar and is warmly greeted. We were immediately seated. The restaurant requests men wear jackets but the tourists and local clientele hardly comply - a few do, but others wear polos and even shorts at dinner. The menu is pretty straight forward and is a balanced list of seafood, poultry, steaks etc. My wife ordered a half dozen oysters to begin with followed by grilled salmon - I ordered a iceberg lettuce wedge followed by duck breast. None of the dishes were memorable for their taste or presentation. They were acceptable, all right, but nothing at all special. Again, I'm sure we dined on an "off night"...but this is what we experienced. On second thought...we'll give this place another chance. How could it have been so crowded - with so many smiling faces - if it doesn't have a habit of regularly pleasing folks and meeting their expectations?

We have been to the bar at the Peninsula Grill on every visit. The staff is very attentive, knowledgeable, and superlative. The wine that the bartendress suggested was wonderful and the cheese plate was to die for! We met several couples and shared our cheese plate and made several new friends.

Thank you for your continued support of Peninsula Grill. We are known for our cuisine. Chef Graham Dailey and his staff create fresh and elegant fare that delights even the most scrutinizing palate. We set ourselves apart even further from our peers with our staff of professional servers. It is amazing the special touches a knowledgeable and passionate server can make. We are fortunate to have a staff that truely cares about their profession and it shows. Thank you for the lovely review. We look forward to serving you again.
